Iowa Bed Bugs

Miller Pest & Termite has been ridding homes in Des Moines and Central Iowa of pesky invaders for over a decade. Bed bugs can be brought into the home in any way at any time. Also, with all of the college towns and campuses spanning the Des Moines and Central Iowa region, apartment complexes, dorms, and secondhand mattresses are prime ways of spreading bed bugs. But regardless of the season, as long as they have a constant food supply and the environment is set at room temperature, bed bugs will set up shop for as long as 300 days, laying as many as 500 eggs in their lifetime.

Detecting a Bed Bug Infestation

Before deciding whether our beg bug inspections are needed, there are a few ways to detect the presence of bed bugs in your home whether it’s on a person or on your furniture. These indicators are the signs we tell our clients to look for before calling Miller the Killer for confirmation.

Bed Bug Bite Symptoms

Firstly, noticing red, swollen bites on your skin could be a good indicator. Bed bugs feed like mosquitoes: on blood. Bed bug bites typically appear in pink or red, swollen spots scattered across sections of any skin that was exposed while sleeping. These bites can become itchy and can appear within hours or days after they occur.

Before jumping to the conclusion that these bites are from bed bugs, though, think about whether the bites occurred before or after you went to bed. Still, this cannot act as confirmation of a bed bug infestation.

Bed Bug Waste

Secondly, bed bugs can also leave clues behind about their presence. These clues are typically in the form of their fecal matter, shedded skin, viable eggs, or even seeing them alive in your home. These will often appear along mattress seams, headboards, baseboards, corners of ceilings and walls, and in small, hidden spaces. These pests, like most, try to hide and will leave their clues close to their hiding places.

To identify bed bugs, it is important to recognize that bed bugs look different dependent on their age. Immature bed bugs typically look translucent or light tan in color and are tiny. Adult bed bugs are easier to spot with their reddish brown, flat, oval-shaped shell, usually reaching 4-5 millimeters in length. These bugs do not have wings. Their eggs are tiny and more difficult to spot, but if you find almost microscopic bundles of white oval-shaped eggs, these could be a sign of bed bugs. Look for other signs with those eggs, though, before assuming they belong to bed bugs. And lastly, the third indicator of their waste, the fecal matter, tend to appear along the seams and corners of the furniture the bed bugs are hiding in. The fecal matter looks like little black seeds and will be scattered along these areas. If you find any of this evidence, call Miller Pest & Termite control for quick and extensive bed bug removal.
