Ants are the number one nuisance pest in the country, and Blair, Nebraska homeowners deal with them constantly. One day your kitchen is clean; the next morning there’s a trail of tiny black ants marching across the counter toward a single crumb. Or maybe it’s carpenter ants — big, dark ants you keep finding near windows and door frames. Either way, the colony sending them is a lot bigger than what you see.

Miller Pest Solutions has been treating ant problems across the greater Omaha area since 2001. We identify the species, find the colony, and eliminate it. That trail of ants across your counter is a symptom. We go after the source.

Signs of an Ant Infestation

A few ants here and there might seem minor. But ants are social insects — where you see a few, there are thousands more nearby:

  • Visible trails. Ants follow pheromone trails between the colony and food sources. A consistent line of ants moving along a baseboard, countertop, or window sill means an established route to your food.
  • Ants near water sources. Bathrooms, kitchen sinks, dishwashers. Ants need water, and many species are drawn to moisture. Finding ants near plumbing fixtures is common.
  • Small piles of dirt or debris. Pavement ants push soil out of cracks in driveways and foundations. Carpenter ants leave small piles of sawdust-like frass near their nesting sites in wood.
  • Winged ants indoors. Swarming ants inside your house indicate a mature colony — possibly a carpenter ant colony in your walls. Don’t confuse these with termite swarmers, though. We can help you tell the difference.
  • Large black ants. If you’re seeing big, dark ants (1/4 to 1/2 inch) — especially near wood structures — those are likely carpenter ants. They don’t eat wood like termites, but they hollow it out for nesting and can cause real structural damage over time.

Why Ants Are Common in Blair

Blair’s climate and landscape give ants everything they need. Warm, wet springs trigger colony expansion and swarming. Summer heat drives ants indoors looking for water and food. The mix of older homes with cracks and gaps in foundations, plus mature trees that carpenter ants love to nest in, creates plenty of opportunity for infestations.

The most common species in the Blair area include odorous house ants (the small black ones that smell like coconut when crushed), pavement ants, and carpenter ants. Each species behaves differently, nests in different locations, and requires different treatment approaches. That’s why proper identification is step one.

Properties near wooded areas or with large trees close to the house face higher carpenter ant risk. And any home with moisture issues — leaky pipes, poor ventilation, damp basements — is attractive to nearly every ant species.

Our Ant Control Process

Species identification. We figure out exactly what ant you’re dealing with. This determines everything — where to look for the colony, what products to use, and how to prevent them from coming back.

Targeted treatment. For most ant species, we use a combination of baits and residual treatments. Baits are carried back to the colony by foraging ants and shared with the queen and other members — this eliminates the colony at the source, not just the ants you see. Perimeter treatments create a barrier around your home.

Carpenter ant specialty. If carpenter ants are the problem, we trace their activity back to the nesting site — often in wall voids, window frames, or damaged wood. We treat the nest directly and address the moisture conditions that attracted them.

Exclusion and prevention. We seal entry points and recommend changes to reduce ant pressure. Trimming branches away from the house, fixing moisture problems, sealing cracks around windows and foundations — these steps keep ants from re-establishing.
