Signs of an Ant Infestation
- Visible trails. Ants travel in organized lines between their nest and food sources. You’ll see them along countertops, baseboards, around sinks, and outside along foundation walls.
- Ants around moisture. Odorous house ants (the ones that smell like rotten coconut when crushed) are drawn to water. Leaky faucets, condensation on pipes, and pet water bowls are common hotspots.
- Wood shavings. Carpenter ants tunnel through moist or damaged wood to create nesting galleries. Piles of fine sawdust-like debris near window frames, deck posts, or porch columns are a telltale sign.
- Dirt mounds in cracks. Pavement ants nest under concrete and push displaced soil to the surface. Look for small sand mounds in driveway cracks, along the garage slab edge, or in sidewalk joints.
- Winged ants. Swarms of flying ants inside the house signal a mature colony nearby — potentially inside the structure. This is especially concerning with carpenter ants, which can cause structural damage over time.
Why Ants Are a Problem in Boys Town
The Boys Town area is well-established — mature trees, landscaped yards, and homes ranging from mid-century to newer builds. That creates a variety of ant habitats. Carpenter ants nest in large trees and can establish satellite colonies inside homes, particularly where moisture has softened wood. Our Ant Control Process
Species ID first. We identify the species before treating. Carpenter ants, odorous house ants, and pavement ants all require different strategies. A product that works on one species may be ineffective — or counterproductive — on another. Getting this right is step one.
Targeted baiting. For most indoor ant species, we use professional bait formulations that worker ants carry back to the colony. The bait spreads through the population, eventually reaching the queen. This eliminates the source — not just the ants you can see.
Non-repellent perimeter treatment. We apply non-repellent insecticides around the foundation, entry points, and conducive areas. Ants can’t detect these products, so they walk through them and transfer the material to nestmates through contact. It’s far more effective than repellent barriers.
Carpenter ant nest elimination. When carpenter ants are confirmed, we locate and treat the nest — whether it’s in a wall void, behind siding, inside a tree, or in damaged roof decking. We also help identify and address the moisture issue that attracted them.
Ongoing prevention. We recommend and can provide seasonal treatments to maintain a pest-free perimeter. Ants are persistent, and preventive service keeps them from re-establishing.
