Ants are the most common pest complaint in the Omaha metro area, and Carter Lake homeowners deal with them every season. A few ants on the kitchen counter is annoying. A well-established colony nesting inside your walls is a different problem — one that store-bought baits and sprays rarely solve for long.
Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating ant infestations in Carter Lake and the greater Omaha area since 2001. We identify the species, locate the colony source, and treat to eliminate — not just repel.
Signs of an Ant Infestation
Ants are visible pests, but the trails you see in the kitchen are just the foragers. The colony could be anywhere. Signs to watch for:
- Ant trails — consistent lines of ants traveling between a food source and their nest. Odorous house ants often follow baseboards and countertop edges.
- Ants near food — finding ants in cabinets, pantries, or around pet food bowls indicates active foraging or an indoor colony.
- Sawdust-like frass — carpenter ants push wood shavings and debris out of galleries they excavate. Finding this near window frames, door frames, or structural wood warrants a closer look.
- Winged ants indoors — swarmers inside the house often mean the colony is nesting inside the structure, not just foraging in from outside.
- Rustling sounds in walls — large carpenter ant colonies are sometimes audible at night in quiet rooms.
Why Ants Are Common in Carter Lake
Carter Lake’s location near the Missouri River means moist soil, mature trees, and the kind of landscaping that supports large ant populations. Odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants are all common in this area. Spring and early summer send foraging ants indoors in large numbers as colonies expand and workers seek food and water.
Older homes with moisture issues in crawl spaces or around foundations are especially prone to carpenter ant activity — these ants prefer wood that’s already been softened by moisture.
Our Ant Control Process
Correct identification matters. Odorous house ants, carpenter ants, and pavement ants each require different treatment approaches. Spraying the wrong product in the wrong place can scatter a colony and make the problem worse.
- Species identification — We determine what you’re dealing with before treating.
- Interior treatment — Targeted bait and/or residual application to ant trails, entry points, and harborage areas inside the structure.
- Exterior perimeter treatment — Foundation perimeter spray to eliminate ants before they enter and create a deterrent barrier.
- Source control — Where possible, we address conditions attracting ants: moisture, entry points, food sources.
