Ants are the number one nuisance pest in Iowa. And if you live in Johnston, you’ve probably dealt with them — marching across your kitchen counter, trailing along baseboards, or swarming around your patio in summer. Some species are just annoying. Others, like carpenter ants, can actually damage your home.
Miller Pest Solutions has been handling ant problems across the Des Moines metro since 2001. We identify the species, find the colony, and eliminate it. Not just the ants you can see — the whole operation.
Signs of an Ant Infestation
A few ants on your kitchen floor might not seem like a big deal. But ants are colony insects — if you see scouts, there are thousands more nearby. Here’s what to watch for:
- Visible trails — Ants follow pheromone trails between their colony and food sources. If you see a line of ants moving along a consistent path, that’s an established trail.
- Small piles of sawdust-like debris — Carpenter ants excavate wood to build their nests. You’ll find fine wood shavings near baseboards, window frames, or structural timbers.
- Winged ants indoors — Swarming ants inside your home (especially in spring) usually indicate a mature colony living inside the structure.
- Ants in food storage areas — Pavement ants and odorous house ants are attracted to sugars and proteins. Finding them in your pantry or around pet food bowls is a common sign.
- Nests in landscaping — Dirt mounds between pavers, along sidewalks, or in mulch beds near your foundation can indicate colonies with easy access to your home.
Why Ants Are Common in Johnston
Johnston’s suburban landscape is basically ant paradise. The mix of mature trees, newer landscaping, and well-watered lawns throughout neighborhoods off Merle Hay Road and NW 62nd Avenue creates ideal habitat for multiple ant species.
Carpenter ants thrive in areas with older trees — and Johnston has plenty of established wooded lots along Beaver Creek and near Terra Park. These ants set up satellite colonies in homes, especially in areas with moisture issues like bathrooms, kitchens, and around leaky windows.
Pavement ants love the cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and patios throughout Johnston’s subdivisions. In summer, they push into homes looking for food and water. Iowa’s hot, humid summers drive them indoors in droves.
Spring rains also flood underground nests, forcing ants to relocate — often right into your basement or garage.
Our Ant Control Process
Store-bought ant sprays kill the ants you see, but they don’t touch the colony. The queen keeps producing, and they keep coming back. We do it differently.
Species identification: Different ants require different treatments. We identify exactly what you’re dealing with — carpenter ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants, or others — before we treat.
Targeted baiting: We use professional-grade baits that worker ants carry back to the colony. This takes out the queen and collapses the entire nest. It’s more effective than surface sprays and lasts longer.
Perimeter treatment: We apply a residual barrier around your home’s exterior foundation, entry points, and common harborage areas to keep ants from coming back.
Interior treatment: When needed, we treat wall voids, baseboards, and other interior areas where ants are active. For carpenter ants, we may use dust treatments injected directly into nest sites.
Ongoing protection: Our regular service plans keep ants and other pests out year-round. Most of our Johnston customers are on quarterly service — it’s the most cost-effective way to stay pest-free.
