Ants marching across your kitchen counter in a neat little line. A trail running along the baseboard from some invisible crack. A mound in the front yard that reappears no matter how many times you douse it with boiling water. Sound familiar? If you’re dealing with ants in your Lee’s Summit home, you’re far from alone — and a can of spray from the hardware store isn’t going to solve it.

Miller Pest Solutions provides targeted ant control that eliminates entire colonies, not just the handful of workers you can see on the surface. We’ve been handling ant problems across the Kansas City metro since 2001, and we know which species cause problems in Lee’s Summit and exactly how to stop them.

Signs of an Ant Infestation

A few ants on the counter after you leave a crumb out might not seem like a big deal. But ants are social insects with colonies that number in the thousands to hundreds of thousands. What you see is a tiny fraction of what’s actually there. Here’s when you’ve got a real problem on your hands:

  • Ant trails. Ants follow pheromone trails — chemical paths laid down by scout ants that found food. A visible line of ants moving between a food source and a crack in the wall or baseboard means a colony has mapped a route into your home and is actively exploiting it.
  • Ants in the kitchen or bathroom repeatedly. Killing the visible ants doesn’t stop them. If they keep reappearing in the same areas day after day, a colony is established nearby — possibly inside your walls — and is sending new foragers along the same trails.
  • Dirt mounds in your yard. Pavement ants build visible dirt mounds in cracks of driveways, along sidewalks, and in lawns. Multiple mounds across your property indicate significant colony activity underground.
  • Wood shavings or sawdust piles. carpenter ants don’t eat wood — they excavate it to create smooth galleries for nesting. Piles of fine wood shavings (called frass) near baseboards, window frames, door frames, or other structural wood are a red flag that shouldn’t be ignored.
  • Winged ants indoors. Swarming ants emerging inside your home — especially in spring or early summer — indicate a mature colony living in your walls or foundation. Winged ants are reproductive members leaving to start new colonies. They’re often mistaken for termite swarmers.

Why Ants Are Common in Lee’s Summit

Lee’s Summit’s climate supports several problematic ant species year-round. Odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants are the most common invaders in homes throughout the area. All three thrive in Missouri’s warm, humid summers, and carpenter ants can remain active inside heated walls even during winter.

The city’s wide range of housing stock creates different ant challenges depending on your neighborhood. Older homes near downtown Lee’s Summit with aging wood framing and occasional moisture damage are prime targets for carpenter ants, which seek out softened wood for nesting. Newer construction on the city’s expanding edges — where fresh landscaping and recently graded soil meet foundation walls — attracts pavement ants and odorous house ants looking for food and shelter.

Spring rains are a major trigger. Heavy rainfall saturates the ground and drives ant colonies to seek higher, drier territory — which often means pushing up through foundation cracks, expansion joints, utility penetrations, and any other gap that connects soil to your interior. Kansas City’s clay-heavy soils hold water and push ant activity upward more dramatically than sandier soils would.

Lee’s Summit’s tree-lined established neighborhoods also provide excellent habitat for carpenter ants, which often nest in dead limbs, stumps, and landscape timbers before sending satellite colonies into nearby homes.

Our Ant Control Process

The key to effective ant control is identifying the species and locating the colony — not just killing the ants you can see. Different ant species require different strategies, and using the wrong approach can actually make things worse. Some ant species, like odorous house ants, practice “budding” — splitting their colony when stressed — which means spraying them with repellent products can turn one colony into two or three.

  • Species identification. We determine exactly which ant species you’re dealing with. This drives every decision in the treatment plan, from product selection to application method.
  • Colony location. We trace ant trails, inspect likely nesting sites inside and outside your home, and identify how ants are gaining entry to your living spaces.
  • Targeted baiting. For most species, professional-grade bait is the most effective tool. Worker ants carry small amounts of bait back to the colony, where it’s shared with other workers, larvae, and — critically — the queen. Eliminating the queen eliminates the colony from the inside out.
  • Exterior perimeter treatment. We apply a non-repellent residual barrier around your home’s foundation to intercept foraging ants before they get inside. Non-repellent products are key — ants walk through them unknowingly and transfer the product to nestmates.
  • Carpenter ant-specific treatment. If carpenter ants are involved, we locate the nest gallery, apply professional dust or foam formulations directly into the void, and identify and treat satellite colonies. We’ll also flag moisture issues that attracted carpenter ants in the first place — because fixing the moisture problem prevents recurrence.
