Ants are the number one nuisance pest in the country. And if you live in Lenexa, you’ve probably dealt with them — marching across your kitchen counter, trailing along your baseboards, or popping up in your bathroom for seemingly no reason. Some ant species are just annoying. Others, like carpenter ants, can cause real structural damage. Either way, DIY sprays rarely solve the problem. They kill the ants you can see while the colony keeps growing behind your walls.
Miller Pest Solutions has been handling ant problems across the Kansas City metro since 2001. We find the colony. We eliminate it. Done.
Signs of an Ant Infestation
- Visible ant trails. Ants follow pheromone trails between their colony and food sources. If you’re seeing a steady line of ants — not just a stray one or two — that’s an established trail.
- Small piles of dirt or debris. Pavement ants push soil up through cracks in your driveway, garage floor, or basement slab. You’ll see tiny mounds of fine, sandy dirt.
- Sawdust-like shavings near wood. Carpenter ants excavate wood to build their nests. They don’t eat it — they push it out. Finding frass (wood shavings mixed with insect parts) near baseboards, window frames, or deck posts means you’ve got a carpenter ant problem.
- Ants in food storage areas. Odorous house ants and pavement ants are drawn to sugary foods and grease. Pantry invasions are common, especially in warmer months.
- Winged ants indoors. Finding winged ants inside — especially in late spring — indicates a mature colony is living in or very near your home.
Why Ants Are Common in Lenexa
Lenexa’s landscape creates perfect ant habitat. Established neighborhoods near Shawnee Mission Park and along Quivira Road have mature trees, landscaped yards, and plenty of organic ground cover — all things ants love. Mulch beds against foundations, tree stumps, and retaining walls provide nesting sites inches from your home’s exterior.
The Kansas City metro’s warm, humid summers drive ant activity into overdrive. Colonies expand rapidly from April through October. When temperatures spike or heavy rains saturate the soil, ants push indoors looking for food and dry shelter. Properties along the Mill Creek drainage and near Black Hoof Park see particularly heavy pressure due to the wooded areas and moisture.
Newer construction in the City Center area isn’t exempt. Disturbed soil from development scatters colonies, and fresh landscaping with heavy mulch gives them new places to set up shop right next to your foundation.
Our Ant Control Process
Identification comes first. Different ant species require different treatments. Carpenter ants need a completely different approach than odorous house ants or pavement ants. We figure out what species you’re dealing with and locate the colony — not just the trailing ants.
Treatment typically involves a combination of targeted baits and exterior barrier applications. Baits are critical because foraging ants carry the product back to the colony, including the queen. Without eliminating the queen, the colony survives. We also treat the perimeter of your home to cut off entry points.
For carpenter ants, we may need to treat wall voids, attic spaces, or areas around moisture-damaged wood where they prefer to nest. We’ll walk you through everything before we start.
