Signs of an Ant Infestation
A few ants here and there might not seem like a big deal. But where there’s one, there are thousands more you’re not seeing. Watch for these signs:
- Visible trails. Ants follow pheromone paths between their nest and food sources. If you see a line of ants marching across a floor or counter, there’s an established colony nearby.
- Small piles of debris. Carpenter ants push sawdust-like frass out of their galleries. Look for it near baseboards, window frames, and wood beams.
- Ants near moisture. Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms attract ants looking for water. Persistent sightings in these areas point to a colony that’s found a reliable resource.
- Winged ants indoors. Seeing flying ants inside your home — especially in winter or early spring — usually means a mature colony is nesting in the structure.
- Rustling sounds in walls. Large carpenter ant colonies can be heard if you press your ear to the wall near an active gallery. Faint crinkling or rustling sounds.
Why Ants Are Common in New Virginia
Central Iowa’s climate creates perfect conditions for ants. Warm, humid summers drive foraging activity, and heavy spring rains push colonies to seek higher ground — which often means your home’s foundation, walls, and crawl space.
New Virginia’s mix of older homes, mature trees, and rural properties gives ants plenty of nesting sites. Carpenter ants especially thrive where there’s moisture-damaged wood, which is common in homes with aging rooflines, decks, or tree contact. Pavement ants colonize driveways and sidewalk cracks. Odorous house ants invade kitchens by the hundreds.
