One ant on the kitchen counter isn’t just one ant. It’s a scout. And if it finds what it’s looking for — crumbs, moisture, a crack in the foundation — hundreds more will follow the pheromone trail right into your Springfield home.
Ants are the most common pest complaint we get at Miller Pest Solutions. They’re persistent, they’re organized, and store-bought sprays usually make the problem worse by splitting colonies. We’ve been solving ant problems across Sarpy County and the Omaha metro since 2007.
Signs of an Ant Infestation
- Ant trails. Lines of ants marching along baseboards, countertops, window sills, or exterior foundation walls. These trails follow pheromone paths between the nest and food sources.
- Ants near water. Sinks, dishwashers, pet bowls, and bathroom fixtures attract ants — especially during dry spells. Odorous house ants are notorious for this.
- Sawdust-like debris. Fine wood shavings (called frass) near wooden structures could indicate carpenter ants. Unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood — they excavate it for nesting. The damage is still significant.
- Small dirt mounds. Pavement ants push soil up through cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and foundations. You’ll see tiny sand piles along expansion joints and garage floors.
- Winged ants indoors. Swarms of flying ants inside your home indicate a mature colony — possibly inside the walls. Don’t confuse these with termite swarmers (ant swarmers have a pinched waist and elbowed antennae).
Why Ants Are Common in Springfield
Springfield’s rural-suburban character makes it prime ant territory. Properties with mature trees, mulch beds, firewood stacks, and adjacent agricultural land provide ideal nesting habitat. Carpenter ants especially thrive in areas with older trees and moisture-damaged wood.
The heavy clay soil in Sarpy County retains moisture near foundations, attracting moisture-loving species like odorous house ants. Spring rains push colonies upward and toward structures. By summer, ants are foraging aggressively for food and water — and your kitchen is an easy target.
Pavement ants are common in any area with concrete — driveways, patios, sidewalks, and garage slabs all provide the cracks and crevices these ants use for nesting.
Our Ant Control Process
Species identification. This matters. Different ant species respond to different treatments. Carpenter ants require locating and treating the nest directly. Odorous house ants need bait-based strategies. Pavement ants call for perimeter treatment. We identify the species first, then build the plan.
Interior treatment. We apply targeted baits and non-repellent products in areas where ants are active — kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and along interior trails. Non-repellent products are key because ants walk through them unknowingly and carry the material back to the colony.
Exterior perimeter treatment. We treat the foundation, entry points, window frames, and door thresholds. We also address conducive conditions — mulch against the house, vegetation touching siding, and debris near the foundation.
Carpenter ant nest treatment. If carpenter ants are present, we locate the nest (often in wall voids, behind siding, or in moisture-damaged wood) and treat it directly. We’ll also identify the moisture source that attracted them.
