Signs of an Ant Infestation

A few ants on the kitchen counter might seem minor. But ants are colonial insects — if you’re seeing workers inside your home, there’s a colony nearby, and it’s only getting bigger. Watch for these signs:

  • Trails of ants moving along baseboards, countertops, windowsills, or into pantry areas
  • Small piles of sawdust-like material near wood trim, window frames, or door frames — this can indicate carpenter ants excavating galleries in structural wood
  • Winged ants (swarmers) inside the home, especially in spring — a strong indicator of a mature colony nesting indoors
  • Nests in mulch, soil, or under pavers outside that are close to the foundation
  • Damaged or hollow-sounding wood — carpenter ants don’t eat wood, but they excavate it to nest, causing structural damage over time

Nebraska is home to several ant species that invade structures — pavement ants, odorous house ants, carpenter ants, and field ants are all common in the Waterloo area. Each species behaves differently and requires a tailored approach.

Why Ants Are Common in Waterloo

Waterloo’s mix of residential neighborhoods, older homes near the Elkhorn River, and heavy tree cover creates ideal ant habitat. Carpenter ants love the moist, decaying wood often found in older homes with wood-to-ground contact, basement sill plates exposed to moisture, or firewood stored against the house.

Odorous house ants and pavement ants thrive in the soil around foundations and under pavement. Spring and summer rainstorms drive them indoors as colonies expand and workers forage for food and moisture. A wet spring along the Elkhorn River corridor typically means a busy ant season in Waterloo.

Homes with mature landscaping, wood mulch directly against the siding, or cracks in foundation walls are particularly vulnerable to year-round ant pressure.

Our Ant Control Process

Effective ant control starts with correctly identifying the species. Treatment strategies differ significantly between carpenter ants, odorous house ants, and pavement ants. Spraying a general insecticide around the perimeter might give temporary relief but rarely eliminates the colony.

assessment and identification. We identify the ant species involved, locate the colony or colonies if possible, and assess entry points and harborage areas around the structure.

Targeted treatments. Interior treatments focus on trailing areas, wall voids (for carpenter ants), and harborage points. Exterior treatments include perimeter applications around the foundation, treating soil and mulch beds, and addressing nests in landscaping features.

Baiting programs. For odorous house ants and other species that are difficult to track to the nest, baiting is often the most effective long-term approach. Workers carry bait back to the colony, eliminating the queen and destroying the population at the source.

Exclusion recommendations. We’ll point out cracks, gaps, and structural vulnerabilities that are letting ants in. Sealing these entry points is a critical part of keeping ants out long-term.
