Signs of an Asian Lady Beetle Infestation

Why Asian Lady Beetles Are Common in Blair

Harmonia axyridis — the multicolored Asian lady beetle — was intentionally introduced by the USDA in the 1970s–1990s as a biological control agent for aphids. It worked too well. The species established and spread across North America, outcompeting native lady beetles and becoming a significant nuisance pest in the fall.

Blair and the broader Omaha metro see heavy Asian lady beetle pressure each fall because of the region’s combination of agricultural land (where beetles spend summer feeding on aphid populations) and dense residential areas (which offer warm structures to overwinter in). As nights cool in October, beetles aggregate by the thousands on sun-warmed building exteriors and force their way in through any available gap. Older homes with less-than-perfect sealing around windows, soffits, and attic vents are especially vulnerable.

Once inside wall voids, they can aggregate in huge numbers — and the smell of their aggregation pheromones actually attracts more beetles the following year. Early treatment is the only way to break the cycle.
