Most people see them and think “ladybugs.” They’re not. The multicolored Asian lady beetle — Harmonia axyridis — is an invasive species that bites, stains surfaces with a foul-smelling yellow fluid, and can overwinter inside your home in the thousands. They swarm the exterior of Milo homes every October, and if you don’t stop them at the building envelope, you’ll be finding them in your windows, light fixtures, and ceiling corners all winter long. Signs of an Asian Lady Beetle Infestation

  • Large swarms on exterior walls — Classic behavior in October/November. South- and west-facing walls in full sun are prime aggregation spots.
  • Beetles inside on warm winter days — Overwintering beetles become active during warm spells and end up on windows and interior walls trying to get out.
  • Yellow staining on walls, curtains, or fabric — Asian lady beetles release a defensive chemical (hemolymph) that is pungent and stains. This is distinct from native ladybugs.
  • Biting sensation — Asian lady beetles bite when handled or when large numbers are present. Not medically significant, but noticeable and unpleasant.
  • Variable appearance — Color ranges from pale yellow-orange to deep red, with 0–20 spots. The white “M” or “W” marking behind the head is a reliable identifier.

Why Asian Lady Beetles Are Common in Milo

Asian lady beetles thrive across Iowa’s agricultural landscape. In summer they’re beneficial — feeding on aphids in soybean fields and gardens. But when fall arrives, every adult from miles around starts looking for a warm structure to spend the winter in, and Milo homes and outbuildings are prime targets.

Properties on field edges, wooded lots, or with southern or western exposures tend to see the heaviest aggregations. Once beetles find their way into wall voids and attics, the aggregation pheromones they deposit attract future infestations year after year. Timing matters. The window for effective exterior treatment is narrow — late September through mid-October, before temperatures consistently drop and the beetles begin actively entering structures. Our process:

  • Perimeter spray treatment — Residual insecticide applied to the entire exterior of the structure, focusing on south- and west-facing walls, eaves, soffits, windows, doors, and foundation perimeter.
  • Entry point assessment — We identify gaps in the building envelope: soffit damage, missing or torn screens, gaps around cable/utility penetrations, loose window glazing.
  • Exclusion recommendations — Sealing entry points physically provides long-term protection beyond the spray treatment season.
  • Interior follow-up if needed — For homes already experiencing heavy interior activity, we treat wall voids and attic spaces as appropriate.
