If you’ve noticed orange or yellowish bugs massing on your home’s exterior walls every fall, those are almost certainly Asian lady beetles — not the beneficial native ladybug. They aggregate in huge numbers, seeking warmth before Winterset’s winter sets in. Once inside, they overwinter in wall voids and attics and emerge again in spring. They bite, they stink when disturbed, and the yellow fluid they release stains fabric and painted surfaces. Miller Pest Solutions can get ahead of them with fall exterior treatments.

Signs of an Asian Lady Beetle Infestation

  • Fall swarms on south/west walls — Large aggregations of orange-yellow beetles on sunny exterior surfaces in October and November is the most obvious sign
  • Biting indoors — Unlike native ladybugs, Asian lady beetles bite when handled or when they’re agitated. Small, mild bites on skin are a telltale sign.
  • Yellow staining — The yellow, foul-smelling fluid (hemolymph) they release when threatened stains curtains, walls, and upholstery
  • Bugs at windows in winter/spring — Overwintering beetles moving toward light sources inside your home indicate they’re already established in the building
  • Pungent odor — A musty, unpleasant smell in rooms where beetles are active, especially if they’ve been disturbed

Why Asian Lady Beetles Are Common in Winterset

Asian lady beetles were introduced intentionally in the US as a biocontrol agent for aphids. They’re very good at their agricultural job — and very good at finding their way into homes every fall. They’re thermally driven, seeking warm structures as outdoor temperatures drop in September and October.

Winterset’s housing mix and mature tree cover provide excellent summer habitat for these beetles. When fall arrives, they congregate on the warmest exterior faces of buildings — typically south-facing walls with good sun exposure — and probe for any opening. Gaps around windows, utility penetrations, soffits, and attic vents are common entry routes.

Iowa winters are cold enough to drive their behavior but not so extreme that outdoor populations are suppressed significantly. Year over year, the problem tends to remain consistent or worsen without intervention.

Our Asian Lady Beetle Control Process

Effective Asian lady beetle control requires action before they enter. Once they’re overwintering inside walls, the options are more limited.

  • Timed exterior treatment — Residual perimeter spray applied in late September or early October, targeting exterior walls, window frames, soffits, eaves, and other aggregation sites
  • Exclusion sealing — Caulking gaps around windows, sealing utility penetrations, installing or repairing attic vent screens to block entry routes
  • Interior treatment if already established — Void treatments and interior perimeter applications where beetles have already gotten inside
  • Vacuum removal — For beetles already present indoors, vacuuming is the recommended removal method — don’t crush them
