Bed bugs have made a full comeback over the last twenty years, and Omaha is no exception. Hotels, apartment complexes, college dorms, used furniture — bed bugs move on luggage, clothing, and secondhand items with ease. Once they’re in your home, they don’t leave on their own. If you’re waking up with unexplained bites, or you’ve spotted small rust-colored stains on your sheets, don’t wait to call a professional.
Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation
Bed bugs are small and nocturnal, which makes early detection tricky. But they leave evidence behind.
- Bite marks on skin — Red, itchy welts, often appearing in a line or cluster on exposed skin. Not everyone reacts to bites, so the absence of bites doesn’t mean you’re clear.
- Rust-colored stains on bedding — These are fecal spots — partially digested blood — that bed bugs leave on sheets, mattress seams, and box spring fabric.
- Live bugs or shed skins — Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, flat, and reddish-brown. Nymphs are smaller and nearly translucent. Look in mattress seams, along the piping of box springs, behind headboards, and inside nightstand drawers.
- Tiny white eggs — Eggs are about 1mm long and cream-colored, often found in tight crevices near where bugs rest during the day.
- A sweet, musty odor — Heavy infestations produce a distinctive smell. If your bedroom has an unexplained sweet or musty odor, that’s worth investigating.
Why Bed Bugs Are Common in Omaha
Omaha is a regional hub with significant hotel, travel, and university traffic. Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Omaha bring thousands of students moving furniture and belongings in and out every year. The Omaha metro’s active secondhand market — thrift stores, estate sales, online marketplace pickups — gives bed bugs plenty of opportunities to hitch a ride into new homes.
Apartment-dense areas near the university corridors and downtown see higher rates of bed bug transmission simply because of shared walls and the speed at which infestations spread between units. But single-family homes aren’t immune. A hotel stay, a weekend visit from a family member, one piece of upholstered furniture purchased at an estate sale — any of these can introduce bed bugs.
Our Bed Bug Control Process
Bed bugs require thorough, targeted treatment. There’s no effective DIY spray that will eliminate a real infestation — the products available to consumers don’t penetrate the harborage areas where bugs and eggs hide, and improper treatment often just disperses them further into the structure.
Miller Pest Solutions starts with a detailed assessment of the affected rooms — mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, furniture, baseboards, electrical outlets, and wall voids. We identify the extent of the infestation before recommending a treatment approach. Depending on the situation, we may recommend conventional chemical treatment, heat, or a combination of methods.
We walk you through the preparation steps required before treatment — proper preparation is critical to success and we explain exactly what’s needed. After treatment, we provide follow-up guidance and schedule a re-assessment to verify elimination. Bed bug treatment isn’t a one-and-done in every case; we’re transparent about that upfront.

Bed bugs get harder to eliminate the longer they’re established. A small infestation caught early is far easier — and less expensive — to treat than one that’s spread to multiple rooms.
