Bed bugs don’t discriminate. They show up in luxury homes and budget apartments alike — and Prairie Village is no exception. These pests are hitchhikers. They travel on luggage, clothing, used furniture, and even in purses and backpacks. One trip, one houseguest, or one secondhand purchase can bring them into your home. And once they’re in, they’re extremely difficult to eliminate without professional help.
Miller Pest Solutions has been treating bed bug infestations across the Kansas City metro since 2007. We know how stressful this is. We also know how to get rid of them — completely.
Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation
Bed bugs are small, flat, and excellent at hiding. Most people don’t realize they have a problem until the population has grown. Here’s what to look for:
- Bite marks. Red, itchy welts — often in a line or cluster — on arms, shoulders, neck, or legs. Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, though. Some people show no visible marks at all.
- Blood spots on sheets. Small reddish-brown stains on pillowcases, sheets, or mattress covers. These occur when bed bugs are accidentally crushed after feeding.
- Dark fecal spots. Tiny black or dark brown dots on mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and nearby furniture. This is digested blood, and it’s one of the most reliable signs.
- Shed skins and eggs. Translucent, light-brown exoskeletons near hiding spots. Eggs are tiny — about the size of a pinhead — and pearly white. Check mattress seams, behind headboards, and inside nightstand drawers.
- Live bugs. Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, reddish-brown, and flat (unless recently fed, when they appear swollen and darker). Check mattress tufts, box spring corners, and the joints of bed frames.
Why Bed Bugs Show Up in Prairie Village
Prairie Village is an established, affluent community — and bed bugs don’t care about that. In fact, some factors in Prairie Village make bed bug introductions more likely than you’d expect.
Travel is a major vector. Prairie Village residents travel frequently — for business, vacation, or family visits. Hotels, airports, and rental properties are common bed bug pickup points. All it takes is one infested hotel room to bring them home in your suitcase.
Prairie Village also has a strong culture of estate sales, antique shopping, and secondhand furniture. Beautiful older pieces from the 1940s through 60s fit perfectly with the neighborhood’s mid-century homes. But used furniture is one of the top ways bed bugs spread between households.
The established, close-knit nature of Prairie Village means homes are near each other. In multi-unit settings or homes with attached garages shared with neighbors, bed bugs can migrate between units through wall voids and utility chases.
Our bed bug treatment Process
DIY bed bug treatments almost never work. These insects have developed resistance to many over-the-counter products, and they’re incredibly good at hiding in places sprays can’t reach. Professional treatment is the only reliable path to elimination.
Detailed assessment. We examine bedrooms, living areas, and common harborage zones thoroughly. We identify the severity of the infestation and all affected areas before developing a treatment plan.
Targeted chemical treatment. We apply professional-grade residual products to cracks, crevices, mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, baseboards, and furniture joints. These products are selected specifically for bed bug efficacy and are applied in accordance with all safety guidelines.
Dust applications. Long-lasting dust formulations are applied into wall voids, electrical outlets, and other hidden harborage areas where liquid products can’t effectively reach.
Mattress encasements. We recommend encasing mattresses and box springs to trap any remaining bugs inside and prevent re-infestation of your sleeping surfaces.
Follow-up treatments. Bed bug eggs are resistant to many products, so follow-up treatments are critical to catch newly hatched nymphs before they can reproduce. We typically schedule two to three treatments spaced about two weeks apart.
Post-treatment monitoring. We verify elimination through visual assessment and monitoring devices. We don’t consider the job done until the bed bugs are gone.
