If you’ve seen clusters of red-and-black bugs swarming the sunny side of your house every fall, those are box elder bugs — and they’re one of the most predictable fall pest problems in Bellevue. They’re not dangerous, but they’re a genuine nuisance: they stain fabrics, emit an odor when crushed, and can end up inside your home in large numbers. Miller Pest Solutions handles them every season.
Signs of a Box Elder Bug Infestation
- Swarms on south-facing exterior walls — large aggregations of red-and-black insects sunning themselves on warm building surfaces in September and October
- Bugs inside the home in fall and spring — finding them around windows, doors, and light fixtures as they enter seeking warmth or emerge from overwintering
- Reddish staining on fabrics or drapes — fecal spots from box elder bugs can leave lasting stains on light-colored materials
- Mild unpleasant odor — released when bugs are crushed or agitated
- Presence of box elder, maple, or ash trees — if these trees are on or near your property, expect box elder bugs
Why Box Elder Bugs Are Common in Bellevue
Boisea trivittata — the box elder bug — is native to the Midwest and extremely well-established throughout Nebraska. The species feeds primarily on the seeds of box elder trees (Acer negundo), which are common across Bellevue and the greater Omaha area. Maple and ash trees also serve as food sources. Wherever those trees grow, box elder bugs follow.
Every fall, as temperatures drop, box elder bugs begin searching for a warm place to overwinter. Buildings provide exactly that — particularly on south- and west-facing walls that collect heat from the afternoon sun. They enter through gaps in window frames, door sweeps, utility penetrations, and any other small opening in the building envelope. Once inside wall voids and attics, they remain dormant until spring, when warming temperatures send them back out — often into your living space instead of outside.
The good news: they don’t breed indoors, don’t damage wood, and aren’t a health threat. The bad news: a large overwintering population inside your walls is still unpleasant to deal with, and the staining they cause on fabric and drapes is real.
Our Box Elder Bug Control Process
- Exterior barrier treatment — residual insecticide applied to building exterior in early fall, targeting aggregation sites and entry points
- Crack-and-crevice sealing — identifying and sealing gaps around windows, doors, utility lines, and other entry points
- Perimeter ground treatment — targeting bugs congregating near the foundation before they move up the walls
- Interior treatment — for active overwintering populations already inside the structure
Like stink bugs and Asian lady beetles, the timing of box elder bug treatment matters. Fall exterior treatments applied before they enter are significantly more effective than interior treatments after the fact.
