The red-and-black markings make them easy to identify. Box elder bugs are one of the most recognizable fall pests in Iowa, and Hartford homeowners deal with them every year as temperatures drop. They’re not dangerous, but a large swarm crawling across your siding — or finding them inside your home all winter — is a real nuisance. Miller Pest Solutions has been handling box elder bug invasions in central Iowa since 2001.
Signs of a Box Elder Bug Infestation
- Large clusters on south-facing walls — box elder bugs are sun-seekers. In fall they swarm warm south- or west-facing exterior walls in large numbers.
- Bugs around window and door frames — they squeeze through gaps around windows, under doors, and through cracks in foundation siding to get inside.
- Reddish fecal staining indoors — their excrement can leave reddish-brown spots on curtains, walls, and upholstery.
- Overwintering bugs emerging in winter — on warm winter days, box elder bugs that have been hiding in wall voids wake up and wander into living areas.
- Bugs on or near box elder, maple, or ash trees — in spring and summer, they feed on seed pods of these trees. If you have box elder trees on or near your property, expect pressure.
Why Box Elder Bugs Are Common in Hartford
Box elder trees are incredibly common across Iowa — they’re a fast-growing native tree that turns up in fence rows, parks, ditches, and residential yards throughout Warren County. Where box elder trees grow, box elder bugs follow. Female box elder trees (seed-bearing) produce the most bug pressure, but populations feed on maples and ash trees as well.
Hartford’s tree-lined neighborhoods and rural surroundings mean box elder bug populations build steadily through summer, then converge on homes in September and October. Structures with wood siding, older windows, and any gaps in the building envelope are most vulnerable. The bugs aren’t a structural threat — they don’t bite hard or cause damage — but their sheer numbers and the staining they cause make them a serious nuisance pest.
Our Box Elder Bug Control Process
Miller Pest Solutions uses exterior barrier treatments applied in fall as the primary control method. A residual insecticide applied to the siding, foundation, and around all entry points kills bugs on contact and discourages others from settling on the structure. Timing matters — we want to treat before the full fall migration hits.
Exclusion is the other half of the solution. Sealing gaps around windows, doors, utility penetrations, and foundation cracks keeps bugs from getting in regardless of what happens outside. We’ll identify the key entry points during our service visit.
If box elder bugs are already inside, treatment of wall voids and crack-and-crevice areas can reduce the overwintering population. We’ll vacuum up accessible bugs and treat harborage areas.
