Box elder bugs are hard to miss — bright red-and-black markings, and they show up in large numbers on exterior walls and windows every fall. They’re common across Missouri, and Lee’s Summit is no exception. For most of the year they’re a minor outdoor nuisance. Come September and October, they become a real invasion problem.
They don’t bite, they don’t sting, and they don’t destroy wood or fabric. But they congregate in large numbers, they can stain surfaces with their reddish feces, and they emit a mild odor when crushed. When hundreds of them are working their way into your home to overwinter, “nuisance” starts to feel like an understatement.
Signs of a Box Elder Bug Infestation
- Large clusters on south- and west-facing walls — warming themselves in afternoon sun as fall arrives
- Bugs congregating on box elder, maple, or ash trees nearby — their primary feeding host plants
- Bugs around window frames, door gaps, utility penetrations — actively looking for entry points
- Reddish staining on walls, curtains, or upholstery — from fecal spotting
- Mild, unpleasant odor when bugs are crushed or disturbed in large numbers
- Bugs emerging indoors through winter or spring from inside wall voids where they’ve overwintered
Why Box Elder Bugs Are Common in Lee’s Summit
Box elder trees are widespread throughout Missouri and the Kansas City area, and Lee’s Summit has plenty of them — in parks, along streets, and in residential yards. Wherever box elder trees grow, box elder bugs follow.
Their population peaks in late summer, then as temperatures drop, they seek a warm place to survive winter. Structures with south or west exposure get the most pressure. Older homes with gaps around siding, windows, or foundations are most vulnerable to large-scale entry.
Once inside wall voids, they’re mostly dormant — but any warm period in winter or early spring triggers movement, and you’ll start finding them around windows and lights.
Our Box Elder Bug Control Process
Like most fall invaders, box elder bugs respond best to prevention. Treating them after they’re inside is harder than blocking them before they enter.
- Exterior barrier spray in early fall — residual insecticide applied to siding, around windows and doors, and at the foundation; kills on contact and provides ongoing protection
- Crack-and-crevice sealing — physically blocking entry points around window frames, soffits, utility lines, and other gaps
- Tree and perimeter treatments — in severe cases, treating host trees and surrounding vegetation to reduce local populations
- Interior follow-up — for bugs that have already made it inside, we can treat wall voids and provide vacuuming guidance
