Why Crickets Are Common in Independence

Missouri’s hot summers produce large cricket populations, and Independence is right in the zone. As August ends and nights start cooling, house crickets that have been living outdoors in tall grass, brush piles, and around foundations start looking for warmth. They’re attracted to lights — outdoor lighting on your home draws them in and keeps them close.

Camel crickets are a year-round basement pest in much of Independence. They need moisture and darkness — any basement or crawl space with humidity issues is suitable habitat. They don’t make noise, so many homeowners don’t realize they have a camel cricket population until they turn on the basement light and see a dozen of them jumping in every direction.

Entry points are everywhere — gaps under garage doors, utility penetrations, door sweeps that don’t seal properly, foundation cracks. Once inside and undisturbed, they stay.
