Earwigs have a reputation that’s mostly undeserved — those rear pincers look menacing but they’re rarely a threat to humans. What earwigs are is a genuine nuisance pest, especially in Alleman yards and gardens during wet spring and summer months. When conditions shift — too wet, too dry, or too cool — they move indoors in large numbers and show up in bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. Once inside, they’re hard to ignore.

Signs of an Earwig Problem

  • Finding earwigs indoors — Earwigs are nocturnal and move fast. Finding them in bathrooms, under sinks, in basements, or in laundry rooms means they’ve entered the structure. Occasional earwigs are normal; consistent daily sightings indicate an active infestation.
  • Earwigs in mulch and landscaping — Lift a rock, turn over a landscape timber, or dig into a thick mulch bed and you’ll likely find earwigs in large numbers. This outdoor harborage is the source of indoor invasions.
  • Plant damage — Earwigs feed on soft plant tissue, leaving ragged holes and notched edges on leaves, seedlings, and flowering plants. Damage is often mistaken for slug or caterpillar feeding.
  • Large populations after wet weather — Wet Iowa springs are prime earwig season. A long, rainy period followed by the first dry stretch often drives earwigs out of saturated soil and into structures.
  • Earwigs in stored items — Earwigs hide in stacks of newspapers, cardboard boxes, potted plants, and garden gloves. Finding them when moving stored items in the garage or shed is common.

Why Earwigs Are a Problem in Alleman

Earwigs love exactly what Alleman provides: open fields, acreages, and wooded areas, abundant moisture from Iowa’s variable spring rainfall, and plenty of mulch beds, leaf litter, and landscape features that create dark, damp harborage areas.

Polk County sees its share of wet springs, and with that comes elevated earwig pressure. After a rainy stretch, earwig populations that have built up in landscaping near the foundation often seek drier conditions inside. They enter through gaps at the foundation level — weep holes in brick, gaps under doors, cracks in siding at grade level.

Homes surrounded by mature landscaping in northern Polk County, just north of Des Moines tend to see more earwig pressure than those with minimal ground cover. The more organic material near the foundation — mulch, leaf piles, ground cover plants — the more harborage exists.

Our Earwig Control Process

Exterior perimeter treatment: We apply residual insecticide around the foundation, focusing on the 3-foot band at ground level where earwigs are most active. Treating the perimeter as they move toward the structure stops them before they enter.

Harborage reduction: We identify the outdoor harborage areas driving the infestation — mulch beds, landscape timbers, leaf accumulations near the foundation — and recommend modifications. Pulling mulch back from the foundation edge and removing excessive ground cover near the home makes a real difference.

Entry point treatment and sealing: Foundation-level gaps are the primary entry points. We treat crack-and-crevice areas and seal accessible entry points to reduce access.

Interior treatment if needed: For established indoor populations, we treat harborage areas — under sinks, behind appliances, along basement baseboards — with residual products that provide lasting control.
