The rear pincers look alarming — there’s no getting around that. But earwigs are more of a nuisance than a real danger. They rarely pinch humans and they’re not venomous. What they lack in direct threat they make up for in sheer numbers when conditions favor them. During wet springs or hot, dry summers in Prairie Village, earwigs push indoors in volume looking for cool, moist shelter. Find one in your bathroom and it’s unsettling. Find a dozen in a week and it’s a problem worth addressing. Miller Pest Solutions handles earwig invasions with perimeter treatments and harborage reduction on Prairie Village properties.
Signs of an Earwig Infestation
- Earwigs — reddish-brown, flat-bodied insects about three-quarters of an inch long with prominent rear pincers (cerci) — found in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, laundry rooms, and dark, damp indoor areas.
- Large concentrations in outdoor harborage sites directly adjacent to the foundation: mulch beds, under landscape timbers, beneath rocks, boards, or leaf litter piled against the foundation.
- Ragged, irregular chewing damage on garden plants, seedlings, flowers, and vegetable leaves — earwigs feed at night, hiding under mulch and debris by day, so you see the damage but not the culprit.
- Finding earwigs indoors near doors, windows, and ground-level entry points after rain, during extended wet periods, or during sudden dry stretches when exterior soil dries out.
- Earwigs in garage or outbuilding areas where cardboard, organic debris, or firewood is stored — they’ll shelter in any dark, slightly moist space.
Why Earwigs Are Common in Prairie Village
Prairie Village’s landscape maintenance culture inadvertently creates ideal earwig conditions. Heavy mulching around foundation plantings is standard practice in the area — it looks good, conserves moisture, and suppresses weeds. It also creates the exact environment earwigs prefer: moist, dark, organic, and right against the foundation. Decorative landscape timbers, rock borders, and densely planted perennial beds add additional harborage within feet of the home.
Wet springs are the worst for earwig invasions. When soil is saturated from extended rain, earwigs migrate upward and outward, flowing along the foundation perimeter and probing for any ground-level entry point. Under door sweeps with worn seals, through weep holes in brick veneer, around utility line penetrations, through hairline cracks in the foundation — earwigs find all of these. The invasion happens quickly when the population outside is high enough.
The inverse happens in hot, dry summers: earwigs seek cooler, moister conditions inside. Either weather extreme can drive earwigs indoors, which means Prairie Village properties can see pressure from multiple directions throughout the season.
Earwigs don’t cause structural damage and aren’t disease vectors. But finding them consistently inside — especially in the kitchen or near food storage — is unpleasant and warrants professional treatment.
Our Earwig Control Process
Earwig control has to start outside. Interior treatments alone won’t stop earwigs if the exterior population remains large and entry points remain open.
- Exterior perimeter barrier treatment — Residual insecticide applied around the foundation, door thresholds, window frames, and ground-level entry points. Creates a contact kill zone that stops earwigs before they enter.
- Harborage reduction guidance — Pulling mulch back several inches from the foundation, removing ground-level debris, and improving drainage near the foundation are critical non-chemical steps. We’ll walk through which landscape features are contributing most to the problem.
- Interior treatment — If earwigs have established indoors, we treat entry areas, basement spaces, bathrooms, and moist interior locations with residual products applied in cracks, crevices, and along baseboards.
- Entry point sealing recommendations — Door sweeps, window weep hole covers, utility line gap sealing, and foundation crack repair. These structural corrections provide lasting relief beyond what any pesticide treatment alone can achieve.
One seasonal note: fall earwig treatment is also valuable even if you’re not currently seeing an invasion. Earwig populations in outdoor harborage areas around the foundation don’t disappear over winter — adults can overwinter in soil and debris. Treating harborage areas in late summer or fall reduces the population that will be present to invade in the following spring, making proactive treatment cost-effective compared to reactive treatment after an invasion is underway.
