Fleas don’t wait for an invitation. One trip to the dog park at Haworth. One rabbit cutting through your backyard. That’s all it takes. Suddenly your pet is scratching raw, your ankles are covered in bites, and every carpet fiber in your house is harboring flea eggs.

Bellevue’s combination of military housing, established neighborhoods, and abundant green space makes it a hotspot for flea activity across the Omaha metro. Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating flea infestations here since 2001. We know what works — and what doesn’t.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Constant pet scratching. Dogs and cats with fleas scratch, bite, and lick obsessively — especially around the hips, tail base, and belly. Some pets develop flea allergy dermatitis, causing hair loss and hot spots from just a few bites.
  • Flea dirt on pet bedding. Those tiny black specks that look like ground pepper? That’s flea excrement. Wet a paper towel and smear it — if it turns reddish, it’s digested blood. That’s flea dirt.
  • Bites on your ankles and feet. Fleas prefer to bite low. Clusters of small, red, itchy bumps around the ankles and lower legs are a classic sign.
  • Visible fleas. Small, dark, fast-moving insects on your pet or jumping from carpet and furniture. They’re about the size of a sesame seed.
  • Pets avoiding certain areas. If your pet suddenly avoids a specific room or piece of furniture, heavy flea activity in that area might be the reason.

Why Fleas Are Common in Bellevue

Bellevue is home to Offutt Air Force Base, which means a large population of families with pets — and frequent moves that can spread flea problems from house to house. Off-base housing and rental properties turn over regularly, and flea pupae can sit dormant in empty homes for months, hatching when new residents (and their body heat and vibrations) move in.

The city’s location along the Missouri River means higher humidity, which fleas love. Fontenelle Forest and the surrounding green corridors support wildlife — deer, raccoons, opossums, feral cats — that distribute fleas across residential neighborhoods.

Nebraska summers are warm and muggy enough to support explosive outdoor flea populations from May through October. And once fleas get inside a climate-controlled home, season doesn’t matter anymore. They breed continuously.

Bellevue’s older neighborhoods with mature trees and shaded yards are particularly flea-friendly. Dense ground cover, leaf litter, and moist soil under shrubs create perfect developmental habitat for flea larvae.

Our Flea Control Process

Flea bombs don’t work. Vacuuming alone won’t fix it. You need a professional treatment that addresses every life stage. Here’s our approach:

Interior treatment with IGR. We apply a combination of adulticide (kills live fleas) and insect growth regulator (prevents eggs and larvae from maturing). This combination is essential. Without the IGR, new fleas keep emerging from the thousands of eggs already in your carpet.

Focus on pet zones. We concentrate treatment on areas where pets sleep, rest, and spend the most time — that’s where flea eggs accumulate most heavily. Carpeted rooms, upholstered furniture, closets, and under beds all get treated.

Baseboard and crack treatment. Flea larvae are photophobic — they burrow deep into carpet fibers and crawl along baseboards to pupate. We treat these critical areas to catch larvae the surface treatment misses.

Yard treatment. We treat shaded areas, under porches, along the foundation, and in areas where pets and wildlife spend time. Reducing outdoor flea populations prevents rapid reinfestation.

Follow-up treatment. Flea pupae are protected inside silk cocoons that resist insecticide. We schedule a follow-up visit in two to three weeks to eliminate fleas that emerge after the initial treatment. Most Bellevue flea jobs require two visits to fully resolve.

Your role matters. We’ll give you pre-treatment prep instructions: vacuum everything, wash pet bedding on high heat, and treat your pets with a veterinarian-recommended flea product. Your preparation directly impacts how fast we can solve the problem.
