Fleas in your Blair, Nebraska home are miserable for everyone — people and pets alike. These tiny parasites bite relentlessly, and once they’ve established themselves in your carpets and furniture, flea shampoo on the dog isn’t going to cut it. Fleas reproduce fast. A single female lays up to 50 eggs per day, and those eggs fall off your pet into carpet fibers, bedding, and furniture where they hatch and continue the cycle. Without treating the home itself, you’ll never get ahead of them.
Miller Pest Solutions has been helping Omaha-area homeowners get rid of fleas since 2001. We treat the environment where fleas live and breed — your house — so the infestation actually ends.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
Fleas are small (about 1/16 inch) and fast. But they make their presence known:
- Pets scratching excessively. Constant scratching, biting, and licking — especially around the tail, belly, and neck — is the most common first sign. Some pets develop flea allergy dermatitis, causing hair loss and hot spots.
- Flea dirt on pets or bedding. Small black specks that look like ground pepper. Place some on a wet paper towel — if they dissolve into reddish-brown streaks, that’s digested blood. Flea dirt. Definitive proof.
- Bites on humans. Red, itchy bites on ankles, feet, and lower legs. Fleas tend to bite low because they jump from the floor. If you’re getting bit around your ankles, fleas are in your carpet.
- Seeing fleas jump. Tiny, dark, fast-moving insects jumping on furniture, carpets, or your socks. Walk through a room in white socks — if you pick up small dark specks, those are fleas.
- Tapeworms in pets. Pets ingest fleas during grooming, and fleas carry tapeworm larvae. If your vet finds tapeworms, fleas are present.
Why Fleas Are Common in Blair
Blair’s suburban and rural character means plenty of wildlife — raccoons, opossums, feral cats, rabbits, squirrels — all of which carry fleas. When wildlife moves through your yard, they drop flea eggs in the grass. Your dog picks up fleas during a walk or just from being in the yard. Indoor-outdoor cats are also major flea vectors.
Nebraska’s warm, humid summers create perfect flea breeding conditions. Flea pupae can survive in carpets for months, waiting for vibrations and warmth that signal a host is nearby. This is why people sometimes get hit with a flea explosion when they return from vacation — the pupae have been waiting to hatch.
Homes with pets, carpeting, and nearby wildlife activity are at highest risk. But even pet-free homes can develop flea problems if previous occupants had pets, or if wildlife gets into crawl spaces or attics.
Our Flea Control Process
assessment. We assess the severity of the infestation and identify the areas of heaviest activity. Pet resting areas, carpeted rooms, and furniture are checked carefully.
Interior treatment. We apply professional-grade products to carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, pet bedding areas, and along baseboards. Our treatments include an insect growth regulator (IGR) that prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults. This breaks the life cycle — which is the key to actually solving the problem.
Preparation guidance. Before treatment, we’ll give you a checklist: vacuum thoroughly (and dispose of the bag), wash pet bedding, and ensure pets are treated with a vet-recommended flea product. The home treatment and the pet treatment work together — skip one and the fleas come back.
Follow-up treatment. Flea pupae are resistant to insecticides. They hatch over a period of weeks. We typically recommend a follow-up treatment 2-3 weeks after the initial service to catch newly emerged adults before they reproduce.
Outdoor treatment if needed. If your yard has heavy flea pressure — shaded areas, dog runs, under decks — we can treat those areas to reduce reintroduction.
