Fleas are one of the most frustrating pests to deal with. They reproduce fast, they’re hard to see, and treating the pet alone never solves the problem. By the time you’re finding fleas, the eggs, larvae, and pupae in your carpet and furniture already outnumber the adult fleas by a wide margin.

Miller Pest Solutions provides professional flea control for Carter Lake homeowners and renters. We treat the environment — not just the surface — to break the flea lifecycle and eliminate infestations.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pets scratching excessively — the most common early sign. If your dog or cat is scratching, biting at its skin, or losing hair in patches, fleas are a likely cause.
  • Flea dirt — tiny dark specks (flea fecal matter) in pet bedding, on furniture, or in carpet. Wet a white cloth and rub it across the specks — flea dirt turns reddish-brown because it contains digested blood.
  • Bites on humans — small, intensely itchy bites, often around ankles and lower legs. Flea bites typically appear in clusters or lines.
  • Seeing fleas jump — adult fleas are small (about 1/8 inch), dark brown, and can jump several inches. Walking through an infested area in white socks makes them visible.
  • Flea activity without pets — fleas can survive in a vacant home for months, waiting for a host. Moving into a previously occupied home and getting bitten is a common scenario.

Why Fleas Are Common in Carter Lake

Carter Lake’s wooded areas, green spaces near the Missouri River, and wildlife corridors provide ideal flea habitat. Rabbits, raccoons, and other wildlife carry fleas into residential yards. Pet owners — especially those with dogs that spend time outdoors — face flea exposure throughout spring, summer, and fall.

The warm, humid summers typical of the Omaha area accelerate flea development. Under ideal conditions, a flea can go from egg to biting adult in as little as three weeks.

Our Flea Control Process

Flea control requires treating the environment, not just the pet. Adult fleas make up only about 5% of the population — the rest are eggs, larvae, and pupae hiding in carpet, furniture, and cracks in flooring.

  • Interior treatment — Residual insecticide application to all carpeted areas, rugs, upholstered furniture, and pet resting areas.
  • Insect growth regulator (IGR) — Prevents flea larvae from developing into biting adults, breaking the reproductive cycle.
  • Exterior treatment — Yard treatment to reduce flea populations in outdoor areas where pets spend time.
  • Pet treatment coordination — We advise on what your vet should handle (on-animal treatment) in coordination with our environmental treatment.
