Signs of a Flea Infestation
Fleas are tiny but leave obvious evidence. Watch for these signs:
- Pets scratching excessively. If your dog or cat is scratching, biting, or licking constantly — especially around the base of the tail, belly, and neck — fleas are the most likely culprit.
- Flea dirt. Those tiny black specks in your pet’s fur or on bedding? That’s flea feces. Put some on a damp white paper towel — if it turns reddish-brown, it’s flea dirt (digested blood).
- Bites on humans. Flea bites show up as small red, itchy bumps, usually around ankles and lower legs. They often appear in clusters or lines.
- Seeing fleas jump. Adult fleas are dark brown, about 1/8 inch long, and they jump. If you see tiny insects hopping on your carpet, furniture, or pet, that’s confirmation.
- Larvae or eggs in carpet. Flea eggs are white and nearly invisible to the naked eye. Larvae look like tiny pale worms and hide deep in carpet fibers and along baseboards.
Why Fleas Are Common in Crescent
Crescent’s location along the Missouri River bottom means high humidity through the warm months. Fleas love humidity. They need it to survive and reproduce. Relative humidity above 50% is ideal for flea development — and Crescent easily hits that from May through September.
The rural surroundings bring wildlife close to homes. Deer, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, and feral cats all carry fleas and deposit them in yards. Your pet doesn’t even need to leave your property to pick them up. A raccoon crossing your yard at night can seed enough flea eggs to start an infestation.

Flea control isn’t a one-step job. These pests go through four life stages — egg, larva, pupa, adult — and you have to address all of them. Here’s our approach:
Thorough evaluation. We figure out where flea activity is concentrated inside your home and identify contributing factors like pet areas, wildlife access points, and high-humidity zones.
Interior treatment. We apply a combination of adulticide and insect growth regulator (IGR) to carpets, upholstered furniture, pet resting areas, and baseboards. The IGR is critical — it prevents eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults.
Exterior treatment. We treat shaded, moist areas of your yard where fleas develop — under decks, along fence lines, in mulch beds, and around pet areas. This reduces the outdoor population feeding the indoor problem.
Homeowner prep guidance. We’ll walk you through what to do before and after treatment: vacuuming thoroughly, washing pet bedding, and coordinating with your vet on pet flea treatment. Your cooperation on this step makes a major difference in results.
Follow-up. Because flea pupae are resistant to treatment, a follow-up service 2-3 weeks later is often necessary to catch newly emerged adults. We’ll let you know upfront if that’s needed.
