A flea infestation in your Des Moines home starts small — maybe your cat seems itchier than usual, or you notice a few bites on your ankles. Give it two weeks. Suddenly you’re dealing with thousands of fleas at various life stages embedded in your carpets, pet bedding, and furniture. That’s how fast they reproduce in Iowa’s humid summers.

Miller Pest Solutions has handled flea infestations across the Des Moines metro since 2001. We use targeted treatments that address every stage of the flea life cycle — not just the adults you can see.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

Fleas are small and fast, but an established infestation announces itself clearly:

  • Non-stop scratching from pets. Dogs and cats with fleas scratch, bite, and chew constantly. Pay attention to the base of the tail, belly, and inner thighs. Some pets develop allergic reactions that cause severe skin irritation and hair loss.
  • Flea dirt. Check your pet’s bedding and favorite resting spots. Tiny black or dark brown specks — flea feces made of digested blood — accumulate in these areas. Wet a paper towel and smear the specks; a reddish-brown streak confirms fleas.
  • Bites on humans. Small, itchy, red welts around your ankles and lower legs. Flea bites often appear in clusters of three or four.
  • Visible fleas. Tiny, dark, fast-moving insects on your pet’s skin or jumping across floors and furniture. If you’re seeing adults, the infestation has been building for weeks — the visible fleas are only about 5% of the total population.

Why Fleas Are Common in Des Moines

Central Iowa’s climate is a flea factory from late spring through early fall. Des Moines averages 70%+ humidity through much of summer, and temperatures consistently sit in the range where fleas reproduce fastest — between 70°F and 85°F.

The city’s green spaces are part of what makes Des Moines great to live in. Gray’s Lake, Water Works Park, Greenwood-Ashworth — they’re also places where wildlife drops flea eggs regularly. Rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, and stray cats carry fleas through residential yards, under porches, and along fence lines.

Des Moines’ older neighborhoods — Beaverdale, Drake, South of Grand — often have mature landscaping with heavy shade. These cool, humid microclimates under bushes and decks are exactly where flea larvae thrive before hitching a ride on your pet.

Our Flea Control Process

Killing adult fleas is the easy part. The challenge is eliminating eggs, larvae, and pupae — which make up 95% of any flea population. Our process addresses all of it:

assessment and assessment. We evaluate your home inside and out to determine infestation severity, identify hot spots, and check for contributing wildlife issues.

Interior application. We treat carpets, rugs, baseboards, upholstered furniture, and pet areas with a combination of residual insecticide and insect growth regulators (IGRs). The IGR sterilizes the reproductive cycle — eggs and larvae can’t develop into adults.

Exterior perimeter treatment. Shaded areas along your foundation, under decks, porches, and in mulch beds get treated to reduce the outdoor flea population feeding the indoor problem.

Follow-up visit. Flea cocoons are nearly impervious to insecticides. New adults emerge over the following 2-3 weeks. We come back to catch them before they lay new eggs. Two treatments typically resolve even heavy infestations.

Before we arrive, we’ll walk you through prep steps — thorough vacuuming, washing pet bedding, coordinating with your vet on pet flea treatment. Your preparation directly impacts how effective our treatment will be.
