Elkhorn’s spacious yards and active pet population make it a hotspot for flea infestations every summer. Large lawns bordered by trees, dogs spending hours outside, and wildlife corridors running through the neighborhood all contribute to flea problems that seem to appear out of nowhere. One week everything’s fine — the next, your carpet is crawling.
Miller Pest Solutions has been dealing with flea infestations across the Omaha metro since 2001. Elkhorn is part of our regular service area, and we treat homes here year-round.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
- Your pet is miserable. Nonstop scratching, chewing, licking. Red, irritated skin. Some pets develop flea allergy dermatitis — an allergic reaction to flea saliva that causes intense itching from even a single bite.
- Flea dirt on surfaces. Check your pet’s bedding, your couch cushions, and the carpet under furniture. Those tiny dark specks are flea droppings.
- Human bites concentrated on legs. Red, itchy bumps around ankles and calves. They often appear in lines or clusters.
- Larvae in carpet. Tiny, translucent, worm-like creatures in carpet fibers or along baseboards. Most people never see larvae — but if you do, you’re looking at a well-established population.
- The “jump test.” Sit on the floor for a few minutes with bare feet. If you start seeing tiny dark insects leaping onto your skin, there’s no question.
Why Fleas Are Common in Elkhorn
Elkhorn’s landscape is the perfect setup for fleas. Big yards with mature landscaping provide shaded, humid microclimates where flea eggs and larvae develop outdoors. The numerous parks and green spaces mean wildlife — rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, feral cats — move through residential yards constantly, dropping fleas as they go.
Nebraska’s summer heat and humidity accelerate flea reproduction. In ideal conditions, the entire lifecycle from egg to adult takes just 2-3 weeks. That means a small introduction can become a full infestation within a month. And Elkhorn’s larger homes mean more carpet, more rooms, and more places for fleas to hide.
One thing people don’t realize: fleas can survive winter inside your home. Heated houses with carpet maintain perfect flea conditions 12 months a year. A summer infestation that isn’t fully resolved will persist through January.
Our Flea Control Process
Comprehensive assessment. We locate the infestation centers — pet beds, favorite lounging spots, carpeted rooms with the heaviest flea activity. Every home’s situation is a little different.
Interior treatment with IGR. We treat all carpeted areas, baseboards, under furniture, closets, and pet areas. Our treatment includes insect growth regulators that stop immature fleas from developing. This is critical — without IGR, you’re only killing the 5% of the population that’s adult, while the other 95% keeps developing in your carpet.
Exterior yard treatment. We treat shaded lawn areas, under decks, along fences, and in garden beds where outdoor fleas breed. This reduces the population your pets encounter every time they go outside.
Homeowner preparation. Before we arrive, we need you to vacuum every carpeted surface thoroughly, wash all pet bedding on hot, and remove items from floors. Vacuuming is especially important — it stimulates flea pupae to emerge, making them vulnerable to treatment.
Follow-up service. We return in approximately 14-21 days to treat again. This catches the fleas that were in the protected pupal stage during the first treatment and have since emerged.
