Grimes keeps growing. New homes, new neighborhoods, new families moving in every year. And every summer, plenty of those families discover fleas. Maybe the dog picked them up at the dog park. Maybe raccoons left eggs in the yard. Either way, once fleas get established in your home, they’re a real pain to get rid of without professional help.
Miller Pest Solutions has been handling flea problems across the Des Moines metro since 2001. We serve Grimes regularly, and we know how to get your home flea-free.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
Most people don’t notice fleas until there are already hundreds — or thousands — in their home. Here’s what tips you off:
- Your pet won’t stop scratching. Excessive scratching, biting at their fur, restlessness, and hair loss (especially near the tail) all point to fleas.
- Flea dirt in pet bedding or on furniture. Those tiny black specks that look like ground pepper? That’s flea feces — dried blood. It’s one of the most reliable early indicators.
- Bites on your legs and ankles. Flea bites on humans appear as small, red, itchy bumps. They’re usually clustered around the lower legs because that’s where fleas jump to from the carpet.
- Visible fleas jumping on light-colored surfaces. Fleas are dark brown and about 1-2mm long. You’ll spot them most easily on white socks, light carpet, or tile floors.
Why Fleas Are Common in Grimes
Grimes’ position on the northern edge of the Des Moines metro means many neighborhoods are built adjacent to agricultural land, grassland, and creek corridors. Wildlife moves through these areas constantly, and wildlife carries fleas.
Central Iowa summers provide exactly what fleas need: warmth and humidity. Once temperatures consistently hit the 70s (usually by late May), flea reproduction kicks into high gear. A single female flea lays up to 50 eggs per day. In favorable conditions, a small problem becomes a big one in under three weeks.
Grimes’ newer subdivisions often have yards that are still establishing — thin turf, fresh mulch beds, developing landscapes. These conditions can actually support flea larvae just as well as a mature yard. And with so many new homeowners bringing pets into the neighborhood, the opportunities for flea introductions multiply.
Our Flea Control Process
Over-the-counter flea bombs and sprays rarely solve the problem. They kill some adults on the surface but miss the eggs and larvae embedded in carpet fibers and cracks. Here’s how we do it right:
Thorough assessment. We determine how severe the infestation is, where fleas are concentrated, and what’s driving the problem — pets, wildlife, or both.
Interior treatment. We apply professional-grade products that kill adult fleas on contact and include insect growth regulators (IGRs) that prevent immature fleas from developing. We target carpets, rugs, pet areas, upholstered furniture, and baseboards throughout infested rooms.
Exterior treatment. Fleas breed outdoors first. We treat shaded, protected areas of your yard where flea larvae develop — under decks, along the foundation, in garden beds, and beneath shrubs.
Follow-up service. Because flea pupae are resistant to treatment (they’re sealed in a cocoon), a second application 10-14 days later catches newly emerged adults before they reproduce.
Before we arrive, we’ll give you clear prep instructions. Vacuuming is critical — it physically removes eggs and stimulates pupae to emerge, making the treatment more effective.
