- Flea dirt. Tiny black specks in pet bedding or on light-colored surfaces. Place some on a damp paper towel — if it turns reddish-brown, it’s digested blood. That’s flea dirt.
- Bites on humans. Flea bites typically appear as small, red, itchy bumps around ankles and lower legs. They often cluster in groups of three or four.
- Seeing fleas jump. Fleas are only about 1/8 inch long, but they jump remarkably far. You’ll sometimes spot them hopping across light-colored carpet or furniture.
