Johnston homeowners know the drill. Summer hits, the humidity rises, and suddenly the dog is scratching like crazy. Then you notice the bites on your ankles. Fleas. They’re one of the most frustrating pests to deal with because they reproduce so fast and they’re hard to eliminate completely without professional treatment.

Miller Pest Solutions has been handling flea infestations in Johnston and across the Des Moines metro since 2001. We use professional-grade products and proven techniques that actually solve the problem — not just knock it back temporarily.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

Fleas are small and fast. By the time you notice them, the infestation is usually well established. Here’s what to look for:

  • Excessive pet scratching and grooming. Your dog or cat scratching constantly — especially around the neck, ears, and base of the tail — is the most common first sign.
  • Flea dirt. Small black specks on your pet’s skin, on bedding, or on light-colored surfaces. Wet it slightly — if it turns reddish-brown, it’s flea feces (digested blood).
  • Bites on humans. Small, red, itchy bumps concentrated around ankles, feet, and lower legs. Flea bites often appear in lines or clusters.
  • Seeing fleas jump. Adult fleas are dark brown, about 1-2mm, and they jump impressively far for their size. You’ll spot them most easily on light flooring or white socks.
  • Pet hair loss or hot spots. Severe flea infestations can cause allergic dermatitis in pets, leading to hair loss, raw skin, and secondary infections.

Why Fleas Are Common in Johnston

Johnston’s mature neighborhoods — especially those near Beaver Creek and along the Saylorville Lake greenbelt — sit in prime territory for flea activity. Established trees, landscaped yards, and proximity to natural areas mean wildlife passes through regularly, dropping flea eggs as they go.

Central Iowa’s climate checks every box for flea reproduction. Summer temperatures in the 70s and 80s, combined with the humidity that comes with being in the Des Moines River watershed, create conditions where flea populations explode between June and September.

Johnston’s trail system and parks — Terra Park, Lew Clarkson Park, the bike trails — are great for getting outdoors with your pets. But they’re also places where pets encounter flea-infested wildlife habitat. A single trip to the park can bring fleas home.

Our Flea Control Process

We’ve refined our approach over nearly two decades of flea work in Central Iowa. Here’s what it looks like:

Assessment. We identify infestation severity, locate concentrations, and determine the source — whether it’s pet-driven, wildlife-driven, or both.

Interior treatment. Professional-grade adulticides combined with insect growth regulators (IGRs) applied to carpets, baseboards, pet areas, upholstered furniture, and any other flea hotspots. The IGR component is key — it prevents eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults.

Exterior treatment. We treat outdoor flea breeding zones: shaded areas under decks and porches, along foundations, in mulch beds, and beneath dense vegetation.

Scheduled follow-up. Flea pupae are protected inside cocoons that resist treatment. A follow-up application about two weeks later targets newly emerged adults before they can lay eggs. This breaks the reproduction cycle.

Before your appointment, we’ll send you specific preparation instructions. Thorough vacuuming and laundering pet bedding before treatment significantly improves results.
