Fleas are one of the most frustrating pests La Vista homeowners deal with. They’re tiny, they multiply fast, and once they’re established in your carpet and furniture, they’re incredibly hard to get rid of on your own. Most people discover the problem when their dog starts scratching nonstop — or when they start getting bitten around the ankles themselves.
Miller Pest Solutions has been solving flea problems across the Omaha metro since 2001. We know the lifecycle, we know the hiding spots, and we know what actually works.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
- Pets scratching excessively. This is usually the first sign. Dogs and cats will chew at their hindquarters, belly, and neck. You might see reddened skin or hair loss in those areas.
- Flea dirt on pet bedding. Those tiny black specks that look like ground pepper? That’s flea feces — digested blood. Wet a paper towel and press a speck into it. If it turns reddish-brown, it’s flea dirt.
- Bites on your ankles and lower legs. Fleas jump from carpet level. Humans typically get bitten around the feet and ankles, with small red itchy welts that appear in clusters.
- Seeing fleas jump. If you can actually see them hopping on your carpet, furniture, or pet, the infestation is already well-established. A single flea can lay 40-50 eggs per day.
- White sock test. Walk through your carpeted rooms wearing white socks. If tiny dark specks appear on them, you’ve confirmed the problem.
Why Fleas Are Common in La Vista
La Vista is a dense, well-established community. Lots of homes with yards, lots of families with pets, and plenty of wildlife passing through — raccoons, opossums, feral cats, rabbits. All of them carry fleas and deposit them in your yard.
Nebraska’s warm, humid summers create ideal flea conditions. Fleas thrive when temperatures are between 70-85°F with humidity above 50%. That’s basically June through September here. And once fleas get indoors, your climate-controlled home becomes a year-round flea habitat regardless of outside weather.
The flea lifecycle is the real problem. Adults on your pet are only about 5% of the population. The other 95% — eggs, larvae, pupae — are hiding in your carpet fibers, furniture cushions, pet bedding, and cracks in hardwood floors. Pupae can survive for months in a dormant state, which is why infestations seem to come back even after you think you’ve handled them.
Our Flea Control Process
Thorough assessment. We identify the severity of the infestation and locate the hot spots — pet sleeping areas, high-traffic carpet zones, furniture where pets rest.
Interior treatment. We treat carpets, baseboards, furniture bases, and other areas where flea eggs and larvae concentrate. Our products target all life stages, including an insect growth regulator (IGR) that prevents eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults.
Exterior treatment. Fleas don’t just live inside. Shaded, moist areas of your yard — under decks, along fence lines, in mulch beds — harbor fleas that re-infest your pets every time they go outside. We treat those areas too.
Homeowner prep guidance. We’ll give you clear instructions on vacuuming, laundering pet bedding, and coordinating with your vet for pet treatment. Flea control only works when the home treatment and pet treatment happen together.
Follow-up. Because flea pupae are resistant to treatment, a follow-up visit is often necessary 2-3 weeks later to catch newly emerged adults before they can lay more eggs.
