Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively — a sudden increase in scratching behavior often signals fleas before you actually see them
  • Flea dirt (fecal matter) — tiny black specks in pet bedding, carpet, or on the pet’s skin at the base of the hair. Wet a white paper towel and press it against the specks — flea dirt turns reddish-brown because it’s digested blood. That simple test confirms fleas versus regular dirt.
  • Bites on people — typically on ankles and lower legs; intensely itchy, small red bumps, often in clusters of 2–3
  • Visible fleas jumping off carpet, pet bedding, or off your pet when you part the fur
  • The white sock test — pull on white socks and walk slowly through the house. Fleas jumping onto the fabric are easy to spot against the white background.
  • Pets refusing to rest in their normal spots — heavy flea activity in a pet’s bed area can drive them to avoid it

Why Fleas Are Common in Missouri Valley

Flea season in southwest Iowa runs from roughly May through November, with peak activity in the hot, humid summer months. Wildlife passing through yards — rabbits, opossums, feral cats — continuously deposit flea eggs in the grass and soil. Pets that go outdoors pick them up and carry them inside. Indoors, the warm carpet environment becomes a breeding ground: larvae develop in carpet fibers, under furniture cushions, in baseboards, and in any undisturbed debris. A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. A small introduction becomes a full infestation quickly — often within 2–3 weeks of the initial exposure.

Effective flea treatment requires hitting all three environments simultaneously: the pet, the interior, and the exterior yard areas the pet uses. Miss any one of them and the infestation re-establishes.

The IGR component is critical — it prevents eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults, collapsing the reproductive cycle. We treat all carpeted areas, rugs, upholstered furniture (especially pet-favored spots), and the perimeter of every room. Baseboards, under furniture, and any area where a pet rests regularly all get attention.

Exterior treatment addresses the yard zones where fleas are most active — shaded areas under decks, along fence lines, in mulch beds, and any area where pets spend time. The goal is to reduce the outdoor flea reservoir so re-introduction from the yard isn’t continuously happening after interior treatment.

After treatment, some flea activity for 2–3 weeks is normal while remaining pupae hatch and newly emerged adults contact treated surfaces. This is expected — the treatment didn’t fail. The IGR is working on eggs and larvae throughout that window. Frequent vacuuming in the post-treatment period helps remove pupae and triggers hatching, accelerating the resolution of the infestation.
