Your dog is scratching nonstop. You’ve found tiny black specks on the couch. And now you’re getting bitten around the ankles. Fleas have moved into your Papillion home, and they’re not leaving without a fight.

Flea infestations escalate fast. A single flea can lay 50 eggs per day, and those eggs fall into carpet fibers, couch cushions, and pet bedding — hatching into a new generation within days. Store-bought flea bombs barely make a dent. Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating flea infestations across the Omaha metro since 2001. We know how to break the flea life cycle and get your home back to normal.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pet scratching and biting. Excessive scratching, biting at the hindquarters, and restless behavior are often the first signs. Check your pet’s belly and inner thighs for tiny, fast-moving brown insects.
  • Flea dirt. Small black or reddish-brown specks on your pet’s skin, bedding, or furniture. Flea dirt is actually flea feces — digested blood. Place some on a wet paper towel. If it turns reddish-brown, it’s flea dirt.
  • Bites on humans. Red, itchy bumps — usually on ankles, feet, and lower legs. Flea bites often appear in small clusters or lines.
  • Seeing fleas jump. Adult fleas are about 1/8 inch long and reddish-brown. You might see them hopping on carpet, furniture, or your pet. They move fast.
  • Flea larvae in carpet. Tiny, translucent worm-like larvae in carpet fibers, especially in areas where pets rest. They’re easy to miss but visible under close assessment.

Why Fleas Are Common in Papillion

Papillion is a family-oriented community. Lots of families means lots of pets. And pets are the number one way fleas enter homes.

Papillion’s parks, trails along the Papio Creek, and large yards give dogs and cats plenty of outdoor time — and plenty of opportunities to pick up fleas from wildlife. Raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, and feral cats carry fleas through yards, leaving eggs and adults behind in the grass. Your dog rolls through that grass, and suddenly fleas are hitching a ride inside.

Nebraska’s warm, humid summers create ideal flea breeding conditions. Populations explode from June through September. But here’s the catch — once fleas establish inside your heated home, they breed year-round. An infestation that starts in July can persist through January if not treated properly.

Papillion’s newer neighborhoods with sodded yards and landscaped beds can also harbor fleas. The moist microclimate under shrubs and in shaded mulch beds is exactly where flea eggs and larvae develop before adults jump onto passing hosts.

Our Flea Control Process

Effective flea control targets every life stage — adults, larvae, and eggs. Miss one stage, and the problem comes back.

Interior treatment. We apply a combination of adulticide and insect growth regulator (IGR) to all flooring surfaces, with special focus on areas where pets spend the most time. The adulticide kills live fleas on contact. The IGR prevents eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults — this is the key to breaking the cycle.

Furniture and pet areas. We treat upholstered furniture, pet bedding areas, and cracks along baseboards where flea larvae crawl to pupate.

Exterior treatment. We treat shaded areas of the yard, under decks, along fence lines, and around doorways — the zones where fleas develop outdoors and re-enter the home.

Client preparation. Before we treat, we’ll ask you to vacuum thoroughly and wash pet bedding on high heat. Vacuuming is critical — it stimulates flea pupae to emerge, making them vulnerable to treatment. We provide detailed prep instructions to maximize results.

Follow-up. Flea pupae are nearly indestructible inside their cocoons. A follow-up treatment two to three weeks later catches the stragglers that emerge after the first application. Most infestations require two treatments for full resolution.
