Flea problems in Raymore homes tend to escalate fast. One day everything seems fine. The next, you’re finding bites on your ankles, your pets are scratching nonstop, and tiny dark specks are jumping off the carpet. Fleas reproduce at an alarming rate — a single female can lay 40–50 eggs per day.
Miller Pest Solutions has been tackling flea infestations across the Kansas City area since 2001. We know what it takes to break the flea life cycle and get your home back to normal.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
Fleas are small — about 1/8 inch — but the signs they leave behind are hard to miss once the population grows:
- Pets scratching excessively — Dogs and cats with fleas scratch, bite, and chew at their fur constantly. Hair loss and hot spots can develop from the irritation.
- Bites on humans — Flea bites appear as small, red, itchy bumps, usually around ankles and lower legs. They often appear in clusters.
- Flea dirt — Tiny black specks on pet bedding, furniture, or carpet. Flea dirt is actually dried blood — if you wet it on a paper towel, it turns reddish-brown.
- Jumping insects — Fleas are incredible jumpers. You might see them hopping on carpet, furniture, or pet bedding.
- Larvae in carpet — Flea larvae are tiny, white, worm-like creatures that live deep in carpet fibers and pet resting areas.
Why Fleas Are Common in Raymore
Raymore’s warm, humid summers create ideal breeding conditions for fleas. Cat fleas — the most common species that affects both cats and dogs — thrive when temperatures are between 65°F and 80°F with moderate to high humidity. That’s basically June through September in Cass County.
Wildlife plays a big role too. Raymore’s suburban setting means raccoons, opossums, feral cats, and rabbits regularly move through yards. These animals carry fleas and drop eggs in your lawn, which eventually make their way inside on pets or even on your shoes.
Homes with pets are obviously at higher risk, but even pet-free homes can get fleas. If you’ve moved into a home where previous occupants had pets, dormant flea pupae in the carpet can hatch weeks or months later when they detect vibration and body heat.
Our Flea Control Process
Fleas have a complex life cycle — egg, larva, pupa, adult — and effective treatment has to address all stages. Just killing the adults you see won’t solve the problem because eggs and pupae are still developing in the carpet.
Our treatment includes application of adulticides and insect growth regulators (IGRs) to affected areas inside the home. IGRs are critical — they prevent eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults, which breaks the reproduction cycle.
We treat carpeted areas, pet resting spots, upholstered furniture, and any other areas where flea activity is concentrated. We also treat the exterior perimeter and yard areas where pets spend time.
Homeowners play an important role too. We’ll give you preparation instructions that include thorough vacuuming (which stimulates pupae to hatch into treated areas), laundering pet bedding, and coordinating pet treatment with your veterinarian. This teamwork approach gets the best results.
Follow-up treatments may be needed 2–3 weeks later to catch any remaining fleas that emerge from the pupal stage.
