Signs of a Flea Infestation
Fleas are tiny — adults are only about 1/16 of an inch — but an infestation makes itself known fast. Here’s what to watch for:
- Pets scratching, chewing, or over-grooming — especially around the base of the tail, belly, and neck
- Small, dark specks in pet fur — either adult fleas or flea dirt (fecal matter consisting of digested blood, which turns red when wet)
- Red, itchy bites on humans — typically around ankles and lower legs, often appearing in clusters
- Fleas jumping on socks or bare feet when walking across carpet or sitting on upholstered furniture
- Flea dirt on pet bedding — dark specks that leave a reddish smear when wiped with a damp white cloth
Here’s what most homeowners don’t realize: adult fleas represent only about 5% of the total flea population in an infested home. The other 95% are eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden in carpet fibers, floor cracks, pet bedding, and upholstery. That’s why over-the-counter flea bombs often fail — they kill adults on contact but don’t address the developing population.
Why Fleas Are Common in Waterloo
Waterloo has no shortage of flea habitat. The Elkhorn River corridor and surrounding green spaces mean heavy wildlife activity — deer, rabbits, and feral cats all carry fleas onto residential properties. Once flea eggs drop off a passing animal into your lawn, they hatch into larvae that can wait in the environment for months before developing into adults ready to jump onto a host.
Nebraska summers provide ideal flea development conditions — warm, humid weather accelerates the life cycle from egg to biting adult in as little as two to three weeks. Homes with outdoor pets, fenced yards with wildlife access, or wooded or brushy areas nearby are at elevated risk.
Fleas can also enter homes on people — they’ll hitch onto pant legs and shoelaces, especially when walking through infested grass. You don’t need a pet to end up with a flea problem in Waterloo.
Our Flea Control Process
Successful flea elimination requires treating all life stages simultaneously — adults, eggs, larvae, and pupae. Treatments that only target adults will fail within weeks when the next generation hatches.
Pre-treatment preparation. We’ll provide you with a prep list before we arrive. This includes vacuuming all carpets thoroughly (which stimulates pupae to hatch into treatable adults), washing pet bedding, and treating pets with veterinarian-recommended flea products. Our treatment won’t work at full effectiveness without proper prep.
Interior treatment. We apply professional residual insecticides with insect growth regulators (IGRs) to all carpeted areas, rugs, upholstered furniture, pet resting areas, and other areas where flea development occurs. The IGR prevents eggs and larvae from developing into reproducing adults, breaking the life cycle.
Exterior treatment. We treat the yard — especially shaded areas, along fence lines, under decks, and in areas where pets spend time. This reduces the environmental flea population that can continuously re-infest the home.
Follow-up. Some newly hatched adults may emerge from protected pupae after initial treatment. A follow-up visit ensures these are addressed before they can reproduce.
