Waukee has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa for over a decade. New subdivisions, new families, new pets — and unfortunately, plenty of fleas to go around. Every summer, Waukee homeowners discover that fleas have moved in, and getting rid of them is harder than any YouTube video makes it sound.

Miller Pest Solutions handles flea control across the Des Moines metro, including Waukee and the surrounding area. We’ve been at this since 2001. If fleas have taken over your home, we can fix it.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

Fleas are tiny — around 1/8 inch — and they’re fast. Most people don’t realize they have a problem until the population has already built up. Watch for these signs:

  • Constant scratching from pets. Dogs and cats react to flea bites with persistent scratching, biting, and grooming. If your pet seems uncomfortable and restless, check for fleas around the neck, belly, and base of the tail.
  • Flea dirt on pet bedding or furniture. Flea dirt looks like fine black pepper. It’s actually digested blood. You’ll find it on pet beds, couch cushions, and carpeting.
  • Red, itchy bites on your ankles. Fleas bite humans too, usually around the lower legs and ankles. Bites appear as small red welts, often in groups of three or four.
  • Tiny jumping insects on carpet or furniture. If you see small dark specks jumping — that’s confirmation.

Why Fleas Are Common in Waukee

Waukee’s explosive growth means a lot of new construction bordering former farmland and natural areas. That transition zone — where developed lots meet grassland, timber, and drainage corridors — is exactly where wildlife carries fleas closest to homes.

Central Iowa’s summer heat and humidity create ideal conditions for flea reproduction. Fleas thrive when temperatures are between 70-85°F with moderate to high humidity. That’s basically June through September in Waukee.

The city’s growing trail system, including connections to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, means pets are regularly exposed to areas where wildlife has deposited flea eggs. Raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and feral cats are the biggest flea carriers in the area.

New-construction homes aren’t immune either. Fleas can already be established in the soil before sod goes down or landscaping is finished.

Our Flea Control Process

Effective flea control requires hitting every stage of the life cycle — adults, larvae, and eggs. Store-bought foggers don’t cut it. Here’s our approach:

assessment and source identification. We figure out where fleas are concentrated and how they got in. This shapes the treatment plan.

Interior application. We treat floors, carpets, baseboards, pet areas, and upholstered surfaces with professional products that kill adult fleas and include growth regulators to prevent eggs and larvae from maturing.

Exterior application. Fleas breed in your yard before they get inside. We treat shaded, sheltered areas where flea larvae develop — under porches, along foundations, in mulch beds, and other protected zones.

Follow-up treatment. Flea eggs can sit dormant for days or weeks before hatching. A follow-up treatment (typically 10-14 days after the initial service) catches newly hatched fleas before they can reproduce.

We also walk you through preparation steps — vacuuming, washing pet bedding, and coordinating with your veterinarian on pet treatment. The whole process works best when we tackle it from every angle.
