Fleas are tiny, relentless, and incredibly frustrating. If your dog or cat has been scratching nonstop — or you’re waking up with itchy bites around your ankles — fleas have probably made themselves at home in your Woodward residence. And once they’re established indoors, flea bombs and drugstore sprays rarely cut it.
Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating flea infestations in central Iowa homes since 2007. We know what it takes to break the flea lifecycle and get your home back to normal. Call us for a free phone bid.
Signs of a Flea Infestation
Fleas multiply quickly. A few hitchhikers on your pet can turn into thousands in your carpet within weeks. Look for these signs:
- Pets scratching excessively — Constant scratching, biting, or licking — especially around the base of the tail, belly, and inner thighs — is the most common first sign.
- Flea dirt on your pet — Tiny black specks in your pet’s fur. Place them on a damp paper towel — if they turn reddish-brown, it’s digested blood. That’s flea dirt.
- Bites on humans — Small, itchy red bumps around ankles and lower legs. Fleas prefer to bite at floor level.
- Seeing fleas jump — Adult fleas are small, dark, and fast. You might spot them hopping on your pet, on light-colored bedding, or across carpet near where pets rest.
- Flea eggs in carpet and upholstery — Tiny white, oval specks that fall off your pet and accumulate in carpeting, pet beds, and furniture cushions.
Why Fleas Are Common in Woodward
Woodward’s mix of residential properties with yards, nearby open spaces, and pet-friendly living makes flea problems predictable. Pets that spend time outdoors — even briefly — can pick up fleas from grass, soil, or contact with wildlife like rabbits, squirrels, and raccoons.
Iowa’s warm, humid summers are prime flea season. Fleas thrive in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F with moderate humidity — which describes a typical Iowa June through September perfectly. But indoor infestations can persist through winter thanks to your home’s heating system.
Here’s what catches most people off guard: 95% of a flea infestation isn’t the adults you see jumping around. It’s the eggs, larvae, and pupae hiding deep in carpet fibers, pet bedding, and upholstery. That’s why treating just your pet isn’t enough. The home has to be treated too.
Our Flea Control Process
We don’t just fog your house and walk away. Our flea treatments are targeted and thorough.
We treat carpeted areas, baseboards, pet resting areas, and upholstered furniture with a combination of adulticide and insect growth regulator (IGR). The adulticide kills live fleas on contact. The IGR stops eggs and larvae from developing into adults — which is critical for breaking the lifecycle.
Before treatment, we’ll give you a prep checklist. Vacuuming thoroughly, washing pet bedding, and treating your pets with a vet-approved flea product are all part of making the treatment as effective as possible. We handle the home; your vet handles the pet. Both need to happen.
Follow-up treatments are sometimes necessary. Flea pupae are protected by a cocoon that resists most insecticides. They can sit dormant for weeks before hatching. If activity continues after the initial treatment, we come back and hit it again.
Our goal is complete elimination — not a temporary knockdown.
