One mole can dig up to 100 feet of tunnel per day. In Madrid’s rich, loamy soil, moles find everything they need — dense earthworm populations, easy digging, and plenty of space to expand. What they leave behind is a lawn that looks like something exploded underneath it: raised ridges running across the yard, volcano-shaped mounds pushed up through the turf, and root systems undermined by a network of tunnels. Miller Pest Solutions removes moles with proven methods — not repellents that don’t work.
Signs of Mole Activity in Your Yard
- Surface tunnels (runways) — Raised ridges running in irregular patterns across the lawn, just below the surface
- Volcano-shaped mounds — Cone-shaped dirt piles pushed up from below as moles excavate deeper tunnels
- Soft, spongy ground — Walking across the lawn feels unstable where tunnel networks run beneath
- Dead grass — Tunneling severs grass roots, causing brown stripes or patches following tunnel lines
- Increased activity in spring and fall — Moles work closest to the surface when soil is moist and earthworms are near the top
Why Moles Are Common in Madrid
Iowa’s soil is some of the richest agricultural ground in the world — and that same quality that makes it great for farming makes it ideal mole habitat. Madrid’s loamy, well-aerated soil supports enormous earthworm populations, which is exactly what moles are after. Moles are insectivores — they eat grubs and earthworms exclusively. They don’t damage plants or eat roots. The destruction to your lawn is entirely structural, caused by the tunneling itself.
Moles are solitary, so one animal can cover a surprisingly large area. That network of tunnels crisscrossing your yard? Probably one or two moles at most. They’re highly territorial and will aggressively defend their tunnel systems from other moles.
Moist soil conditions after rain or irrigation bring earthworms close to the surface, which in turn brings moles working in shallow surface tunnels — the ones that do the most visible lawn damage.
Our Mole Control Process
We use targeted baiting. Our technicians inspect the lawn, map the tunnel network, and identify active runways before placing bait where mole activity is current. That focused approach avoids treating inactive tunnels and concentrates service where it can make a difference.
For customers on an ongoing service program, we can also apply preventive lawn treatment during regular visits to help make treated areas less attractive to moles and discourage new activity. We monitor for fresh tunnels, review the results with you, and adjust the approach when activity changes.
For properties with continuing pressure from adjacent field edges, we can discuss a seasonal monitoring and management program that catches new activity early before it spreads across the lawn.
