Signs of a Mosquito Problem
You probably don’t need a checklist to know you have mosquitoes. But here’s what separates a normal level of activity from a serious problem:
- Unable to spend time outdoors in the evening. If mosquitoes drive you inside within minutes of stepping out, especially during dawn and dusk, you have heavy mosquito pressure.
- Multiple bites per outing. Getting five or more bites during a short time outside isn’t normal background mosquito activity — it’s an indication of a large breeding population nearby.
- Mosquitoes inside your home. They follow you through open doors or enter through torn screens. If you’re killing mosquitoes inside regularly, the exterior population is significant.
- Standing water on your property. Birdbaths, clogged gutters, plant saucers, old tires, low spots in the yard — any container or depression that holds water for more than a few days is a potential mosquito breeding site.
Why Mosquitoes Are Bad in Ankeny
Central Iowa’s climate is mosquito heaven. Warm summers, high humidity, and regular rainfall create abundant breeding habitat. Our Mosquito Control Process
Property assessment. We identify breeding sites and mosquito resting areas on your property. Mosquitoes don’t fly far from where they breed — if they’re bad in your yard, the source is usually within 200 feet of where you’re getting bitten.
Barrier treatment. We apply a residual spray to vegetation, shrubs, tree canopy undersides, fence lines, and other shaded resting areas where adult mosquitoes hide during the day. This kills mosquitoes on contact and continues to work as other mosquitoes land on treated surfaces.
Breeding site reduction. We identify and address standing water sources on your property. Sometimes it’s as simple as dumping a plant saucer or adjusting a downspout. Other times it requires treating standing water that can’t be eliminated — like retention areas or ornamental ponds — with larvicides that prevent mosquito larvae from developing.
Seasonal program. Mosquitoes are a season-long problem that requires ongoing treatment. We offer monthly treatment programs from May through September, timed to maintain continuous protection through Iowa’s peak mosquito season.
