Kansas City summers should mean backyard barbecues, patio evenings, and kids playing outside until dark. Instead, mosquitoes drive everyone indoors by 7 p.m. Those citronella candles and tiki torches? They don’t do much. And the big-box foggers coat everything in chemicals without actually solving the problem. If you want to reclaim your yard, you need targeted mosquito control from someone who understands the science.

Miller Pest Solutions provides professional mosquito reduction services across the Kansas City metro. We’ve been at it since 2007, and we know what works in this climate.

Signs of a Mosquito Problem

You probably don’t need a checklist to know you have mosquitoes. But understanding the scope helps target treatment effectively.

  • Constant biting during outdoor activities. If you can’t walk to the mailbox without getting bit, mosquito populations around your home are high.
  • Mosquitoes swarming at dusk. Many species are most active during dawn and dusk. Large swarms near doors, patios, and decks indicate breeding sites nearby.
  • Standing water sources on your property. Bird baths, clogged gutters, flower pot saucers, old tires, kids’ toys that collect water — mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap’s worth of standing water.
  • Mosquitoes indoors. If they’re getting inside through open doors or gaps in screens, the outdoor population near your home is significant.

Why Mosquitoes Are Common in Kansas City

Short answer: heat and humidity. Kansas City summers average temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s with humidity levels that make it feel even hotter. Mosquitoes love it. The city also gets plenty of rain from May through September, creating standing water in low spots, drainage ditches, and anywhere else water can pool.

Kansas City’s geography contributes too. The Missouri and Kansas river corridors, along with numerous creeks — Brush Creek, Indian Creek, Blue River, Turkey Creek — create extensive mosquito breeding habitat running right through residential neighborhoods. Homes near these waterways, particularly in the Waldo, Brookside, Red Bridge, and Northland areas, tend to have the worst mosquito pressure.

Over 50 species of mosquitoes have been identified in Missouri. The Asian tiger mosquito, which bites during the day (not just at dusk), has become firmly established in the KC area. That means you can get hammered by mosquitoes at any time of day, not just evenings.

Our Mosquito Control Process

Our mosquito service targets both adult mosquitoes and their breeding sites. It’s a two-pronged approach because killing adults alone doesn’t stop the next generation from hatching.

We apply a residual barrier treatment to vegetation, fencing, shaded areas, and other surfaces where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. This creates a treated zone around your outdoor living spaces. When mosquitoes land on treated surfaces, they’re eliminated.

We also identify and treat standing water sources on your property that can’t be eliminated. For areas like drainage features, catch basins, or water gardens, we use larvicide products that prevent mosquito larvae from developing into biting adults.

Our seasonal mosquito program runs from approximately May through October, with treatments every 3-4 weeks during peak season. We adjust timing based on weather patterns — a wet July means more breeding sites and potentially more frequent treatment.

We also walk your property and point out water collection points you might not have noticed. Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from dumping out a forgotten bucket behind the shed.
