Prairie City summers should be about backyard barbecues and evenings on the porch. Instead, mosquitoes drive people inside by dusk. Iowa’s warm, humid summers and abundant water sources create perfect mosquito breeding conditions, and Prairie City — with its creeks, ponds, and proximity to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge — is no exception.

Miller Pest Solutions has been providing mosquito control across central Iowa since 2007. We can’t eliminate mosquitoes entirely — no one can. But we can dramatically reduce populations on your property so you can actually use your outdoor space.

Signs of a Mosquito Problem

You don’t need a professional to tell you mosquitoes are bad. But here’s how to know if your property is contributing to the problem:

Why Mosquitoes Are Common in Prairie City

Geography works against you here. Prairie City is in central Iowa’s watershed, with small creeks, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas that hold water after rain. The fields and grasslands around town — including the restored prairies of Neal Smith NWR — create expansive habitat for mosquitoes.

Iowa gets plenty of rainfall in late spring and summer. Every heavy rain fills ditches, creates puddles in fields, and tops off any container sitting in a yard. Within days, those become active mosquito breeding sites.

Species like Aedes vexans (the inland floodwater mosquito) are especially common in Iowa and can breed in enormous numbers after wet weather. Culex species, which can carry West Nile virus, thrive in stagnant water closer to homes.

Our Mosquito Control Process

We target mosquitoes where they rest, breed, and fly. Here’s the approach:

Property evaluation. We identify breeding sites and resting areas around your home. Shaded vegetation, dense shrubs, tall grass, and standing water are all targets.

Barrier treatment. We apply a residual mosquito control product to vegetation, fences, shaded areas, and the undersides of structures where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. This kills mosquitoes on contact and provides residual protection for weeks.

Breeding site reduction. We treat standing water that can’t be eliminated (ornamental ponds, drainage areas) with larvicide. We also help you identify and eliminate unnecessary water sources.

Recurring seasonal service. Mosquitoes breed continuously throughout summer. We offer monthly treatments from May through September to maintain protection all season long.
