Valley, Nebraska sits right along the Platte River — and if you’ve spent a single summer evening outside here, you already know what that means. Mosquitoes. Thick clouds of them. The combination of river bottomland, irrigated fields, and humid Midwest summers makes Valley one of the more mosquito-heavy communities in the greater Omaha metro. And these aren’t just annoying. Mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, Zika, and other diseases that put your family and pets at real risk.
Miller Pest Solutions has been helping Nebraska homeowners fight back against mosquitoes since 2007. We don’t just spray and hope for the best — we target mosquito breeding sites and resting areas to knock populations down hard. If you’re tired of being eaten alive in your own backyard, we can help.
Signs of a Mosquito Problem
Mosquitoes aren’t exactly subtle. But there’s a difference between “a few bugs at dusk” and an actual infestation on your property. Here’s what to watch for:
- Constant biting during daytime hours. Some species, like the Asian tiger mosquito, bite all day — not just at dawn and dusk. If you’re getting bit at noon, you’ve got a serious population on your hands.
- Buzzing near doors and windows. Mosquitoes congregate around entry points, looking for ways inside. Screens with small tears are an open invitation.
- Standing water anywhere on your property. Old tires, clogged gutters, birdbaths, kids’ toys, even bottle caps. Mosquitoes can breed in less than a tablespoon of water.
- Larvae in water features. Check ponds, rain barrels, and drainage ditches. If you see tiny wriggling organisms near the surface, those are mosquito larvae — and they’ll be adults in days.
- Shady, damp areas with heavy vegetation. Adult mosquitoes rest in dense shrubs, tall grass, and under decks during the heat of the day.
Why Mosquitoes Are Common in Valley
Geography works against Valley when it comes to mosquitoes. The Platte River floodplain creates extensive low-lying areas where water pools after rain. Agricultural irrigation adds even more standing water to the landscape. And Nebraska’s summers deliver the heat and humidity mosquitoes need to breed rapidly — a single female can lay 200+ eggs at a time, and the cycle from egg to biting adult takes about a week in warm weather.
Valley’s mix of rural acreages, newer subdivisions, and proximity to open farmland means there’s no shortage of breeding habitat. Properties near drainage ditches, creek beds, or low spots in fields tend to get hit hardest. But even in-town lots deal with serious mosquito pressure from June through September.
Our Mosquito Control Process
We take a targeted approach to mosquito control. Here’s what that looks like:
Property assessment. We walk your yard and identify breeding sites, resting areas, and conditions that attract mosquitoes. This matters because just spraying without addressing the source is a waste of money.
Source reduction recommendations. We’ll point out standing water you might have missed — clogged gutters, low spots in the yard, containers holding water. Eliminating breeding sites is the single most effective thing you can do.
Barrier treatment. We apply a residual product to vegetation, fences, under decks, and other areas where adult mosquitoes rest. This kills mosquitoes on contact and continues working for weeks. We focus on the shady, sheltered spots mosquitoes actually use — not just blanketing the whole yard.
Recurring service. Mosquito control isn’t a one-and-done deal. We offer seasonal programs that treat your property on a regular schedule throughout mosquito season to keep populations suppressed.
