Signs of a Mosquito Problem

If you’re in Waterloo and can’t enjoy your backyard from late spring through early fall without being eaten alive, you have a mosquito problem. More specifically:

  • Constant buzzing and biting outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk
  • Multiple bites every time you step outside — even for brief periods
  • Mosquitoes sheltering in vegetation — resting on the undersides of leaves during daylight hours
  • Standing water anywhere on the property — flower pot saucers, clogged gutters, tarps, bird baths, old tires, low spots in the yard — all active mosquito breeding sites
  • Mosquitoes inside the home — finding them indoors suggests entry points that need to be addressed

In Nebraska, the primary mosquito species include Culex pipiens (the northern house mosquito, a West Nile virus vector) and Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito). West Nile virus is an annual concern in Douglas County — mosquito control isn’t just about comfort.

Why Mosquitoes Are Common in Waterloo

Waterloo’s location along the Elkhorn River is the main driver. Floodplain areas, river vegetation, detention ponds, and low-lying properties with standing water after rain create massive mosquito breeding habitat. Female mosquitoes need only a bottle cap’s worth of water to lay eggs — a property with multiple small water sources can produce thousands of mosquitoes in a single season without any standing pond or ditch nearby.

Nebraska summers are warm and humid — prime conditions for rapid mosquito development. Eggs can hatch and develop into biting adults in as little as seven to ten days in warm weather. A wet spring followed by a hot summer, which is common along the Elkhorn valley, routinely produces high mosquito populations in Waterloo-area neighborhoods.

Properties with dense ornamental vegetation, shaded areas with high moisture, or proximity to the river or drainage channels see the heaviest pressure.

Our Mosquito Control Process

Mosquito control requires a two-pronged approach: reducing adult populations that are present now, and eliminating breeding sources that are producing new mosquitoes continuously.

Source reduction assessment. We walk the property and identify every standing water source. Some are obvious; many are not. We’ll make specific recommendations for eliminating breeding sites — because no amount of insecticide treatment will keep up with unlimited reproduction.

Adulticide fogging. We apply residual insecticide treatments to resting sites — the underside of leaves on shrubs and perimeter vegetation, shaded areas, and ornamental plantings. Adult mosquitoes rest in these locations during daylight hours. Treatment kills resting adults and provides a residual effect for several weeks.

Larvicide treatments. For standing water that can’t be eliminated (catch basins, large ornamental ponds, water features), we use larvicide products that kill mosquito larvae before they become biting adults.

Seasonal programs. A single treatment provides relief for several weeks. For ongoing protection through mosquito season, we offer scheduled treatment programs timed around peak activity and re-treatment intervals.
