Florence is one of Omaha’s oldest neighborhoods — the former site of a Mormon settlement and one of the first developed areas in this part of Nebraska. The housing stock reflects that history: late 1800s and early 1900s construction with the structural characteristics of buildings that have been standing for well over a century. Add to that the neighborhood’s geography — tucked in a bend near the Missouri River flood plain, with proximity to Standing Bear Lake and the Papio creek system — and you have a pest environment shaped by both significant moisture influence and very old infrastructure. Florence is not a typical Omaha neighborhood, and its pest challenges aren’t typical either.

Common Pests in Florence

Mosquitoes
Florence’s proximity to the Missouri River flood plain and Standing Bear Lake creates some of the highest mosquito pressure in the Omaha area. Flood plain areas hold water after rain events, creating large temporary breeding sites. Standing Bear Lake and the Papio creek tributaries in the area provide persistent mosquito habitat throughout the warm season. Residents in lower-lying parts of Florence deal with mosquito populations that are significantly higher than inland neighborhoods.

Rodents
Both house mice and Norway rats are active in Florence. The proximity to creek systems and the flood plain provides excellent rat habitat — Norway rats are semi-aquatic by nature and thrive in the moist, overgrown edges of waterways. They move from creek corridors into adjacent residential structures, particularly in fall. The neighborhood’s oldest homes have foundation vulnerabilities that give both rats and mice easy access.

Ants
Odorous house ants and pavement ants are widespread in Florence. The moisture-rich environment around creek edges and lower-elevation lots keeps ant colonies well-hydrated, and the older housing stock provides numerous interior entry points. carpenter ants are a concern in homes with any moisture-damaged structural wood.

Spiders
wolf spiders, cellar spiders, and garden spiders are all common in Florence. The proximity to undeveloped green space and water creates high insect diversity that supports large spider populations. Older basements and crawl spaces in Florence’s historic homes are frequently occupied by multiple spider species.

centipedes
House centipedes favor the moist, cool basement environments that Florence’s old homes provide. They’re alarming to encounter — fast, multi-legged, and seemingly appearing from nowhere — but they’re actually a symptom: centipedes are following their prey, which means you have other insects in the space they’re hunting. Their presence is a signal to investigate moisture and general insect activity in the basement.

earwigs
Earwigs are moisture-seeking insects, and Florence’s combination of high ambient moisture near water features and older homes with basement seepage makes them a consistent pest. They move indoors primarily through foundation gaps and ground-level entry points during and after rain events.

Why Florence Homes Are Vulnerable

The Missouri River flood plain geology means Florence sits on ground that holds and transmits moisture differently than the higher, drier elevation of much of the rest of Omaha. Basements in flood plain-adjacent neighborhoods have higher hydrostatic pressure from the water table, leading to more seepage, more interior humidity, and more of the conditions that insects and rodents prefer. This isn’t something paint or caulk resolves — it’s a function of where the neighborhood is built.

Standing Bear Lake and the Papio creek tributaries running through the area are genuine ecological features — they support bird and wildlife populations and give the area its natural character. They also sustain mosquito breeding at a level that residents closer to dry upland neighborhoods simply don’t experience. No amount of backyard treatment fully offsets a lake and creek system as a breeding source; management means reducing your property’s contribution and protecting outdoor living areas.

The housing age in Florence — many homes approaching or exceeding 100 years old — means structural entry points that have had a very long time to develop. Foundation mortar in this age class is often original. Plumbing penetrations have been modified by multiple owners. Window frames have settled. The entry point inventory in an 1890s Florence home is extensive.

Our Pest Control Services in Florence

Miller Pest Solutions has served Omaha since 2001, and we’re both NPMA members and QualityPro certified. Joel Miller has been in pest control since 2007. We’re familiar with the specific challenges of older homes near Omaha’s northern creek and river corridors, and we take a realistic approach to pest management in high-moisture environments.

Every service starts with a paid assessment. In Florence, that means assessing both the structural entry points and the environmental conditions — foundation moisture, crawl space condition, basement seepage areas, and proximity to vegetation and water sources — that are driving pest activity. We document and explain before recommending any treatment.

For mosquito control, we can treat resting vegetation around your yard and address conducive moisture conditions on your property. For rodents, exclusion work to close structural entry points is essential alongside any baiting program. We use products safe for families and pets throughout.

Serving Florence and All of Omaha

We service all of Florence and surrounding north Omaha neighborhoods, as well as Carter Lake, Ionia, and the full Omaha metro. Miller Pest Solutions is a local company — not a franchise — and we know this city’s neighborhoods and the distinct pest challenges each one presents.
