Midtown Omaha is one of the city’s most architecturally diverse neighborhoods — you’ll find craftsman bungalows from the 1920s on the same block as mid-century ranches and 1970s colonials. That age range is interesting from a historical standpoint and genuinely challenging from a pest control perspective. The older the home, the more entry points exist. Foundations that have settled for 80 or 100 years develop cracks. Wood sills rot. Utility penetrations get larger over time. Midtown’s dense tree canopy, which gives the neighborhood so much of its character, also provides rodent highways right to rooftop access points.
Common Pests in Midtown Omaha
Rodents
House mice and Norway rats are the most consistent pest complaint in Midtown. The neighborhood’s older infrastructure — deteriorating sewer lines, aging alley systems, and foundations with decades of wear — gives rodents excellent access to structures. Roof rats use tree branches overhanging homes to access upper stories and attics. A mouse can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime; Midtown homes have no shortage of those.
Ants
Odorous house ants and carpenter ants are both active in Midtown. Carpenter ants are especially concerning in older wood-framed homes where moisture damage has softened structural lumber. They don’t eat wood the way termites do, but they excavate it to nest, and a large carpenter ant colony in a rim joist or window frame causes real structural damage over time.
Spiders
wolf spiders, cellar spiders, and yellow sac spiders are all common in Midtown basements and crawl spaces. Older homes with dirt-floor crawl spaces or unfinished stone basements are particularly hospitable to spider populations.
earwigs and centipedes
Both thrive in the moist, cluttered environments common in Midtown’s older basements and crawl spaces. Centipedes are fast and alarming when encountered indoors — they’re following the moisture and the prey (other insects) that older Midtown homes tend to harbor.
Termites
Eastern subterranean termites are a real risk in Midtown given the volume of old structural lumber throughout the neighborhood. Homes that haven’t been inspected in several years — especially those with basement window wells, wood porches, or soil contact with wood siding — should be evaluated.
Bed Bugs
Midtown’s rental housing density and proximity to entertainment districts means bed bugs cycle through the area with some regularity. They spread through shared laundry facilities and secondhand furniture, and Midtown’s dense housing stock facilitates spread between units.
Why Midtown Homes Are Vulnerable
The central problem in Midtown is age. Homes built between 1910 and 1960 were constructed without modern pest exclusion in mind. Foundation drainage didn’t follow today’s standards. Basement windows are often original, with frames that have long since separated from their rough openings. The junctions between different building materials — brick meets wood, stone meets concrete — create gaps that develop over decades of settling and freeze-thaw cycling.
Midtown’s mature tree canopy is the other major factor. Enormous silver maples and elms with branches over rooflines are functional rodent bridges. Trees growing close to foundations create root channels that direct moisture toward the structure and give burrowing pests pathways to the perimeter. Dead wood in older trees harbors carpenter ant colonies that then forage into adjacent homes.
seasonal pest pressure follows Omaha’s climate. Spring rains drive ants and earwigs toward drier interior spaces. Summer heat increases spider and wasp activity. Fall sends mice and other insects looking for winter harborage — and Midtown’s older housing stock offers plenty of options.
Our Pest Control Services in Midtown Omaha

Every job starts with a paid assessment. In Midtown, that typically means a thorough look at the foundation exterior, basement or crawl space, attic access points, and any areas of visible moisture damage. We’ll document entry points and activity before recommending treatment.
We offer targeted one-time treatments and ongoing quarterly service plans. For Midtown homes with persistent rodent issues, exclusion work — sealing the entry points that keep letting them back in — is often a critical component. We use products that are safe for families and pets, applied precisely rather than broadly.
Midtown also has one pest issue that doesn’t get enough attention: carpenter ants. In a neighborhood with this much old wood, moisture damage is common, and carpenter ants follow moisture into structural lumber. An active carpenter ant colony in a rim joist or window sill isn’t just an annoyance — it’s damaging the structure of the house. If you’re seeing large, dark ants (not the small odorous house ant variety) inside the home in spring, that’s worth getting evaluated.
