Signs of a cockroach infestation

- Egg cases (oothecae). These small, dark brown, purse-shaped capsules each contain 30–40 eggs for German cockroaches. Finding them means active reproduction in your home.
- Musty odor. Large cockroach populations produce a distinctive, oily, musty smell. If you notice it in your kitchen, bathroom, or basement, that’s a strong indicator.
- Smear marks. In areas with moisture, cockroaches leave dark, irregular smear marks along walls and surfaces as they travel their regular routes.
Why Cockroaches Appear in Boys Town

Because roaches don’t discriminate based on how clean your house is. German cockroaches — the most common indoor species in Nebraska — hitchhike. Species identification. Treatment depends on what species you have. German cockroaches require a completely different approach than American or Oriental cockroaches. We identify the species first, then build the treatment plan.

Crack and crevice treatment. We treat wall voids, pipe chases, electrical boxes, and other harborage areas with residual products and dusts that kill roaches in their hiding spots.
Exterior perimeter treatment. For American and Oriental cockroaches, we treat the foundation perimeter, window wells, drain entries, and other exterior harborage areas to create a barrier.
Monitoring. We place sticky monitors in key locations to track population levels and confirm elimination. This is how we know the treatment is working — not guesswork.
Follow-up. German cockroach infestations typically require 2–3 treatment visits spaced a few weeks apart to account for hatching egg cases. We stay on it until the population is gone.
