Finding a roach in your Kansas City home is never just one roach. For every one you see scurrying across the kitchen floor at 2 a.m., dozens more are hiding in cracks, behind appliances, and inside wall voids. Roaches reproduce fast, spread bacteria, and trigger allergies and asthma — especially in kids. They’re not just gross. They’re a real health concern.

Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating roach infestations across the Kansas City metro since 2007. We don’t just spray and pray. We target roach populations at the source and make sure they’re gone.

Signs of a Roach Infestation

Roaches are nocturnal, so you might have a significant infestation before you ever see one in daylight. Here’s what gives them away:

  • Droppings. Small, dark, pepper-like specks in kitchen cabinets, under sinks, behind the refrigerator, and along baseboards. German roach droppings look like ground coffee.
  • Egg cases (oothecae). Small, brown, purse-shaped capsules tucked into crevices. Each one can hold 30-40 baby roaches. Finding even one means the population is growing.
  • Musty smell. A heavy roach infestation produces a distinctive oily, stale odor. You’ll notice it in kitchens and bathrooms first.
  • Live roaches at night. Flip on the kitchen light at midnight. If roaches scatter from the counter or stovetop, you’ve got a problem.
  • Smear marks. In areas with moisture, roaches leave dark, irregular streaks along walls and floors as they travel their regular routes.

Why Roaches Are Common in Kansas City

Kansas City’s hot summers and moderate winters — combined with plenty of older housing stock — make it prime territory for roaches. German cockroaches are the most common indoor species and thrive in apartments, restaurants, and homes throughout the metro. They spread through shared walls, delivered groceries, cardboard boxes, even secondhand electronics.

American cockroaches (the big ones — sometimes called “waterbugs”) are also common in Kansas City. They prefer basements, sewer systems, and crawl spaces. The city’s aging sewer infrastructure gives them easy access to buildings, particularly in older neighborhoods like the River Market, Westport, and the West Bottoms.

Oriental cockroaches show up in damp basements and around foundation drains. Kansas City’s clay-heavy soil tends to hold moisture against foundations, creating exactly the environment these roaches love.

Our Roach Control Process

Effective roach control starts with a thorough assessment. We identify the species (treatment differs for German roaches versus American or Oriental roaches), assess the severity, and locate harborage areas.

For German roaches — the most persistent species — we rely heavily on professional-grade gel baits and insect growth regulators. Baits are critical because they spread through the roach population via contact and ingestion. We place them strategically in cracks, crevices, hinges, and voids where roaches actually live. Not just along baseboards where they walk.

For American and Oriental roaches, treatment often focuses on the exterior and entry points: foundation cracks, basement window wells, floor drains, and sewer line connections. We also apply residual products in basements and crawl spaces to knock down populations and prevent re-entry.

Severe German roach infestations may require multiple visits. We’re upfront about that. Roaches didn’t build up overnight, and clearing them out completely takes follow-through.

Why Choose Miller Pest Solutions

Roach control is one of those jobs where experience matters. A lot. Joel Miller has been doing this since 2007, and our team has handled everything from a few American roaches in a basement to full-blown German roach infestations in multi-unit buildings. We’re QualityPro Certified and NPMA members — credentials that fewer than 3% of pest control companies in the U.S. hold.

We also believe in educating our customers. We’ll tell you exactly what attracted roaches, how they got in, and what you can do to keep them from coming back. That’s part of the service.
