Nobody wants to flip on the kitchen light and see cockroaches scatter. But it happens — even in nice neighborhoods, even in well-kept homes. Roaches are opportunistic. They follow moisture, warmth, and food sources. And in Lenexa, especially in apartments near City Center or older homes along 95th Street, cockroach problems are more common than most people realize.

Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating cockroach infestations across the Kansas City metro since 2001. We know what works — and just as importantly, what doesn’t.

Signs of a Roach Infestation

  • Live roaches at night. Cockroaches are nocturnal. If you’re seeing them during the day, the population is large enough that they’re being crowded out of hiding spots. That’s a serious infestation.
  • Droppings that look like coffee grounds or black pepper. German cockroach droppings are small and dark, found in cabinets, under sinks, behind appliances, and along baseboards. Larger species leave cylindrical droppings.
  • Egg cases (oothecae). German roaches carry a small, brown, purse-shaped egg case that holds 30–40 eggs. Finding these — or their empty shells — means the population is reproducing actively.
  • A musty or oily smell. Large roach populations produce a distinct odor. If your kitchen or bathroom smells off and you can’t find the source, roaches could be the cause.
  • Smear marks along walls and cabinets. Roaches leave dark, irregular streaks where they travel frequently, especially in damp areas.

Why Roaches Are Common in Lenexa

German cockroaches — the most common indoor species — don’t come from outside. They’re brought in. Grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, even deliveries from restaurants can introduce them. Lenexa’s mix of residential, commercial, and restaurant corridors along 87th Street Parkway and I-435 means there’s no shortage of sources.

Multi-unit housing is especially vulnerable. Apartments and townhomes share walls, plumbing, and utility chases. One unit with a roach problem can seed neighboring units quickly. The newer mixed-use developments are built tight, which is great for energy efficiency but also means roaches can thrive in the warm, humid spaces behind walls.

American cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches — the larger, outdoor species — are common in basements, crawl spaces, and around storm drains. Lenexa’s clay soils retain moisture, and heavy rains push these larger roaches indoors seeking dry ground.

Our Roach Control Process

Step one: identify the species. German cockroaches require a very different treatment approach than American or Oriental roaches. We inspect kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and any area with warmth and moisture.

For German cockroaches, we use targeted gel baits, growth regulators, and crack-and-crevice treatments. Fogging or bug bombs? Those are counterproductive — they scatter roaches deeper into walls and contaminate surfaces without eliminating the colony. We place products precisely where roaches harbor and travel.

For larger outdoor species, we address entry points, treat the exterior perimeter, and reduce moisture sources that attract them. Basement and crawl space treatments are common for Lenexa homes dealing with American or Oriental cockroaches.

Follow-up visits are part of the plan. Roach eggs are resilient, and we come back to make sure new hatchlings don’t reestablish the population.
