Cockroaches are survivors. They’ve been around for 300 million years and they’re not going anywhere — unless you have the right approach. In Shawnee, German cockroaches are the biggest indoor threat. They breed fast, hide well, and resist most over-the-counter products. A single female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime. That’s not a problem you spray away with a can from the hardware store.

Miller Pest Solutions has been eliminating roach infestations across the Kansas City metro since 2001. Targeted treatments. Follow-through. Results you can actually see.

Signs of a Roach Infestation

  • Roaches running when you turn on lights. German cockroaches scatter from light. If you see them in the kitchen or bathroom at night, there are many more hiding nearby.
  • Small dark droppings in cabinets and drawers. German roach droppings look like ground pepper or coffee grounds. Check under sinks, behind appliances, and in cabinet corners.
  • Egg cases in hidden areas. The tan, ridged egg case (ootheca) of a German cockroach holds around 30-40 eggs. Find one and you know the population is actively growing.
  • An oily or musty smell. Roaches produce a pheromone that smells musty. A persistent odor in your kitchen that cleaning doesn’t fix could be a roach problem.
  • Smear marks on walls and surfaces. In areas with moisture, roaches leave brown, irregular smear marks along their travel routes.

Why Roaches Are Common in Shawnee

German cockroaches are indoor pests — they don’t live outside and migrate in. They’re introduced through grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, and even takeout containers. Shawnee’s commercial areas along Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nieman Road include restaurants and retail that can harbor roach populations. From there, they travel home with unsuspecting shoppers.

Apartments and multi-family housing along the Johnson Drive corridor and near Monticello Road are particularly susceptible. Shared walls and plumbing create highways for roaches to move between units. One tenant’s problem becomes the whole building’s problem fast.

American cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches — the big ones — are outdoor species that enter basements and crawl spaces from storm drains, sewer connections, and foundation cracks. Shawnee’s older infrastructure provides plenty of access points, especially in homes built before the 1980s where weatherproofing has degraded.

Our Roach Control Process

Species identification drives everything. German cockroaches need precision baiting, insect growth regulators, and crack-and-crevice applications in kitchens and bathrooms. We treat behind and under appliances, inside cabinet voids, around plumbing penetrations, and along every harboring point we identify during assessment.

We never use foggers or bug bombs. They’re ineffective against German roaches and actually make the problem worse by driving them deeper into walls and spreading contamination. Professional-grade gel baits and targeted applications are far more effective.

For American and Oriental cockroaches, we treat exterior entry points, basement perimeters, and moisture-prone areas. Sealing gaps around utility lines and drain covers helps prevent reinfestation.

Roach jobs require follow-up. Eggs hatch on their own schedule, and we come back to eliminate the next generation before it reaches reproductive age. Most German roach treatments need two to three visits spaced about two weeks apart.
