Nobody wants to flip on the kitchen light and watch roaches scatter. It’s one of those pest problems that feels personal — and it should be taken seriously. Cockroaches contaminate food, trigger asthma and allergies, and spread bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli. In Urbandale, German cockroaches are the most common indoor species, and they breed at an alarming rate once established.

Miller Pest Solutions has been dealing with roach infestations across the Des Moines metro since 2001. We use targeted methods that eliminate the population — not just the ones brave enough to come out in the open.

Signs of a Roach Infestation

Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing one during the day usually means the population is large enough that competition is forcing some out of hiding. Look for these signs:

  • Droppings. German cockroach droppings look like black pepper or coffee grounds, concentrated in cabinets, drawers, behind appliances, and under sinks. Larger species leave cylindrical droppings with ridges.
  • Musty odor. A heavy roach infestation produces a distinct, oily, musty smell that gets stronger as the population grows. If your kitchen or bathroom has an unexplained odor, investigate.
  • Egg cases (oothecae). Small, brown, purse-shaped capsules found in hidden areas — behind the refrigerator, inside cabinets, in cracks and crevices. Each German cockroach egg case holds about 30-40 eggs.
  • Shed skins. Roaches molt multiple times as they grow. Finding light-brown exoskeletons in kitchen cabinets, pantries, or bathroom vanities indicates an active, growing population.
  • Live roaches at night. Open a cabinet or turn on a light in the kitchen at 2 AM. If roaches scatter, you have a problem. The ones you see represent a fraction of the total.

Why Roaches Are Common in Urbandale

German cockroaches — the species behind most residential infestations — don’t come in from outside. They’re introduced. Grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, delivered packages, visitors’ luggage. Once they’re in, they colonize fast. A single female and her offspring can theoretically produce thousands of roaches in a year.

Urbandale’s residential mix includes single-family homes, apartments, townhomes, and condos. Multi-unit housing is especially vulnerable because roaches travel between units through shared plumbing, electrical conduits, and wall voids. But single-family homes are far from immune.

Any home with food, water, and warmth can sustain a roach population. Kitchens and bathrooms are primary zones. Iowa’s cold winters actually make the problem worse indoors — roaches aren’t going anywhere when it’s 10°F outside. They hunker down and breed.

Our Roach Control Process

Roach control requires a systematic approach. Foggers and bug bombs scatter roaches deeper into walls without killing them all — and the survivors bounce back fast. Professional treatment is different:

assessment. We identify the species, locate harborage areas, and assess the infestation level. Knowing exactly where roaches are concentrated guides our treatment plan.

Gel bait application. Professional-grade gel baits placed in cracks, crevices, cabinet hinges, behind appliances, and in wall voids. Roaches eat the bait and carry it back to their hiding spots, where it spreads through the population. This is the most effective method for German cockroaches.

Residual treatment. We apply targeted residual products to entry points, plumbing penetrations, and harborage zones to kill roaches that contact treated surfaces over the following weeks.

Follow-up and monitoring. We schedule follow-up visits to assess progress and reapply as needed. Serious infestations may require 2-3 treatments to fully eliminate. We also place monitoring traps to verify the population is declining and eventually gone.

Sanitation guidance. We’ll give you specific recommendations to reduce food and water sources that sustain roach populations — fixing leaky plumbing, sealing food storage, eliminating grease buildup, and reducing clutter in key areas.
